My Review:

First off, let me say I’ve never written such a challenging review. Why was it challenging? Because the story is just that good. I looked for something that wasn’t quite up to par, and I couldn’t find it. This story really has it all. It offers a distinctive blend of elements that all mesh perfectly to reveal a tale of deception, compassion, love, betrayal, amazing courage and strong convictions. Who doesn’t love a hero who’ll sacrifice himself, and a heroine who’s not perfect, but his perfect match? And all of this is supported by secondary characters, and subplots that enhance the storyline, giving it depth and making this book a thoroughly fantastic tale. If you enjoy urban fantasy, paranormal, or fantasy this book is a must read.

LeMoyne is now firmly on my auto-buy list. As a matter of fact, I’ve already bought the second book in the series and am looking forward to reading it.

Welcome to Monday, everyone! We have a special book tour review today. It's for Mirror, Mirror a YA paranormal/horror novel. So grab a beverage, and let's get started. Here's the cover and the blurb:

Piper is nearly as obsessed with antiquities and century-old houses as her mother is. My Review:

Piper is an average teen who struggles with loss, grief, and constant upheaval in her life. Constantly moving from home to home leaves her looking for stability and security. One way she finds this is through a group of friends she’s had for a very long time. Another way is to share the love of antiques with her mother. When she finds an exquisitely made mirror, she believes it will be the perfect addition to her bedroom. And since I really detest those spoiler reviews that detail every plot line, you’ll have to read the book to find out just how Piper grows from ordinary to extraordinary, what she’ll do for love, and what she learns along the way.

Ms. Verstraete has crafted an engaging read with a well thought out plot and enough twists and turns to keep you turning pages. She’s created down-to-earth characters we can all relate to, and cheer for. Although I did realize early on that English isn’t the author’s first language, and I struggled a bit with that, because writing it is different than speaking it. It’s like a secret handshake; there are a million snafu’s that catch you up. However, in spite of that the story still held my interest.

If you are a fan of YA paranormal/horror, you’ll enjoy this book. I believe once the language issues are worked out—and they aren’t major, they just need some fine tuning—Ms. Verstraete has a tremendous future ahead of her as a writer. She is studying law at university, and I can see why. She’s brilliant. And I’m honored to have been able to review one of her first works.

Majanka Verstraete is a twenty-one year old female from Belgium. She’s currently studying law at university. Her greatest passions in life are writing and reading. She especially enjoys writing books in the young adult genre, ranging from young adult horror novels to epic fantasy and paranormal romance. She has currently published two books, The Blood That Defines Us and Mirror, Mirror. She’s working on a collection of horror short stories, The Thirteenth Hour, which is due for release on June 1st 2012. This Year In Writing

I've spent the last couple days seriously considering my writing goals. Realistically, given my schedule, er, okay, I said no excuses this year didn't I. Darn, that didn't take long did it?

The first stop will be to finish my current WIP. Then I'd really like to write a novella. That would be a new challenge. And lastly, to complete another novel length work.

There we go. It's out in the open. Now I've got to go hunt up some of those word tracker thingies to post on my blog. Just so you can follow along.

Yep, that's it. Sounds simple doesn't it?

I love this time of year. The after Christmas part. It makes me feel energized. Well, truthfully, this year, we’re having people over for New Year’s Eve. So guests equal cleaning. That’s not a complaint, but you know how we get. Sorta omg, is everything just right? Again. Didn’t we just do that last week?

Right now I’m thinking about 2011, what I was able to accomplish, and what I wasn’t. One of the things I didn’t do was set hard and fast concrete goals. Especially for my writing. Thus I watched the days and weeks blow by while doing something else. Something that was just as important I’m sure, as keeping my dream alive.

Really? Where’s that little ‘I call bullshit’ icon when you need it. I’ve been reading a lot lately about how goals should just be generalized because we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves. Well, there’s hard, and then there’s HARD.

Hard (meaning difficult, uncomfortable, or just what you really don’t want to do) is when you give up your favorite television show to write that fourth chapter whose beginning just escapes you because can’t figure out where to start it. Hard is when you get up early, or stay up late to write, because it’s necessary to your happy existence. Hard is when you spend your lunch hour writing, instead of going out for burgers or shopping.

And then there’s HARD. Really, truly, gut wrenching, life-changing HARD. HARD is when your spouse serves in the military, and you have to serve right along with them because they have a dangerous job, and you keep the home fires burning without them, every day. HARD is not having enough food to eat. HARD is losing a loved one. HARD is being homeless. Really homeless, like living on the street, or in your car.

See the difference?

I’m not really a resolutions kind of gal, but this coming year I will set goals. And the first one is not to whine about how ‘Hard’ my life is. I know people in all of those situations who’ve got it HARD. There are times when my life has been HARD. And I’m incredibly grateful that my life isn’t that way right now.

We’re all crazy busy most of the time. Yet we manage to make time for things that are important to us. And we’ll happily or maybe not so much, let the rest slide. I’m going to spend the weekend thinking about my concrete goals for 2012.

Once I get them on paper, I’ll let you know what they are. And you can follow along and see if I do better with concrete goals than rather nebulous ones. At this point I have to say that I truly do admire people who can use nebulous goals and be successful. That must be awesome. Truly. It just doesn’t work for me. Thankfully, we can always change our strategy.

It’s with that thought in mind, that I’ll raise a glass of bubbly over the weekend, and be thankful for all of my writing friends and fans, who inspire me to be a better person. I didn’t say a softer one, but truly, a better one.

Guest Author Autumn Piper

Hey everyone. Today's guest is my fabulous friend and awesome author, Autumn Piper. She's one of the authors celebrating the Christmas Bash with Lyrical Press. (*waves* Merry Christmas, Autumn!) Without further ado, here's our guest.

With a little help from our friends.

Who among us doesn’t need friends? I know I do—and claim some top-notch, world class best as my own. (Sutton Fox included. Merry Christmas, Sutton!)

I think characters need friends, too. And those friends can influence how a character thinks, feels, acts. Sometimes in positive ways, and others… Well, we don’t need a lesson in peer pressure.

I love secondary characters—reading them and writing them. For me, they make the story whole and give us another look at how our characters act/react in different social situations. And my characters always, always have friends, to use as sounding boards, to lean on, to party with and forget their troubles, get razzed by, to celebrate the good times with.

In Waiting for Revenge, my lead character Mandy is pushed, pulled, influenced, tempted, and goaded by various other characters. Poor Mandy gets Advice Overload. She’s in a tough spot trying to decide what to do about her wayward—though not wholly bad—husband. (As if the holidays don’t come with enough hassles already, right?) Though she strives to keep her predicament private, someone else is always finding out about her troubles. Her great aunt gives her pretty stern advice and tells her to take her husband to task, her big brother thinks she should leave him immediately, and his wife proves herself a First Class Girlfriend as well. Her son, who above all else she tries to shelter, guesses something is up and wants to protect her, her marriage counselor advocates revenge… And above all, her heart tells her she’s over her marriage and moved on, but she just can’t get past fear and guilt to welcome in those new feelings for someone else. She’s in a real quandary, and unfortunately for Mandy, the more she discusses her situation with other characters, the deeper her confusion (something of a Quagmire of Indecision).

As we all do, she eventually figures out what’s best for her kids and herself, and goes for it, with a few bumps along the way. She gets her happy ending, survives her ordeal, and provides the reader with a few laughs along the way (and a few emotional patches, too, though it’s not a gut-wrenching, sad story)…and her friends are by her side at the end just like they were in the beginning. Just like true friends should be.

While her clueless husband launches a campaign to win her back, Mandy meets Adam, the perfect shoulder to cry on. Will perfect justice prove just how sweet revenge can be when you wait for it?

Content Warning: Real people aren't all good or all bad. Neither are the characters in this story. The shade of right or wrong you see may depend upon whose glasses you are looking through.

If you're looking for a great read this holiday season, or anytime for that matter, you should give this story a try. I've read it, and highly recommend it. It's got engaging characters, an emotionally gripping plot we can all relate to, and hot romance. But don't think it's a sad story, Ms. Piper has crafted a story filled with her sharp wit, touching scenes, and enough humor to keep you turning the pages. What's not to love?

Christmas Traditions at Ericka Scott’s House

Don't you just love Christmas traditions? I do. Without further ado, here's fabulous author, Ericka Scott to talk about hers.

Around the Scott household, the weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas all seem to be jam-packed with Christmas parties and family get-togethers. Some years, we have too many to fit into two short days. Over the last couple of years, I’ve let activities crowd out some of our most memorable traditions. Not this year.

This year, we’re having a real tree which we’ll decorate to the strains of NSync’s Christmas album (it’s tradition, you know). Then, we’ll gather around the fireplace to light our Yule log and eat sugar cookies we made to distribute to the neighbors as gifts.

These cookies are, in our eyes, masterpieces. No, they aren’t those gorgeous things you see in bakery windows, but have the quirks that our family is known by. We decorate Christmas fish, only one of which is given three eyes and made especially for our friend, Jon. There are some traditional shapes, stars and Santas, but you are just as likely to find rocket ships amongst the Christmas trees, a T-Rex waiting to devour the red and green bunnies, and there is always a haunted church cookie -- complete with sugar black bats in the belfry.

“Hello?” she called. A creak sounded from above and a trickle of discomfort slid down her spine. She pulled out her key chain, from which hung a small canister of mace. Another creak made her jump.

“Hello?” she called again. Taking a deep breath, she strode purposefully into the house and found herself in a small living room. Lia glimpsed a small alcove off to the side and expected to find a small dining area, or perhaps an attached office.

Her breath caught in her throat as she walked into another large living room and straight into the past. Positioned under the window were the couch and loveseat she remembered from growing up. A recliner sat in the corner, a newspaper already opened to the comics on the seat.

She shivered. A tall enclosed bookcase, the one that had resided in Lia’s bedroom, stood next to the window. If she stepped closer, she knew she’d recognize every title on its shelves.

A small wooden rocking chair sat next to the recliner. A Raggedy Ann doll vied for seat space with her twin, Raggedy Andy.

“Oh, God,” Lia said. The memorial to her family should have been macabre. Instead, it brought tears to her eyes. Even the antique desk her sister, Sylvie, had thrown a fit to own and then despised when computers became popular and her father wouldn’t let her buy a more functional desk had a place in the room. A smile tugged at the corner of Lia’s mouth.

She could almost hear Sylvie’s famous whine, “But, Dad…”

As memories flooded her mind, she had to blink back a sudden rush of tears. She took a step back, turned and nearly ran back to the hallway. A light dimmed and brightened in another room. Lia didn’t need to count the pulses to know there would be eight.

A short walk found her in the kitchen. The stainless steel appliances sparkled and even the floor seemed to have been freshly waxed. She wished her kitchen looked this good. A towering pile of newspapers indicated they were sisters, after all. The stack teetered on the corner of the kitchen table. All of them were opened and folded to reveal the crossword puzzle.

Had Sylvie left these here? She couldn’t remember her sister having a penchant for crosswords, but she obviously didn’t know Sylvie as well as she’d thought.

Or had someone else brought these in and put them there?

Speaking of which, where was her sister?

She headed upstairs, calling as she went. Just as empty as downstairs. And just as neat. A small blue plastic item on the floor of her sister’s office appeared to be the only thing out of place.

Lia scooped it up. A thumb drive. She went to put it on the desk when a loud creak sounded behind her. She shoved it into her pocket and fumbled for her keys.

Heavy footsteps approached up the stairs.

Lia turned as a shadow fell across the doorway.

If you’re like me, your evil day job has put you behind on all the holiday duties you should be doing. Like decorating, baking, sending cards, and shopping. Shopping, nope, I haven’t even started yet. Today will be my first foray into getting the perfect gift.

It’s wonderful to get the gift that’s just right for someone you care about. There’s really nothing better than watching the emotions cross their face as they unwrap something that’s special to them.

I’m doing things a little differently this year though. When I go out today, I’ll be shopping with a purpose. And that purpose is to make a concerted effort to shop locally. I’m either going to buy gifts that help a local charity, or shop at local merchants because they need help just like the rest of us. What better way to buy American than to do it in your own back yard. And help your own community in the process.

Not that malls aren’t great. But small town merchants need love too.

This week we have a very special guest for you. All of you know that paranormal is my absolute favorite genre to read, so it is with great joy that I welcome paranormal author Nina Croft.

I promise I’ll try to be still and not interrupt too much. Let’s get started!

1. From your website, I see that you write paranormal, science fiction, and fantasy. What did you write first? And why were you drawn to it?

Actually, I first started out trying to write contemporary category romance. I submitted a few partials to Harlequin, got some encouraging rejections – they tended to like my voice but said I had way too much external conflict.

Then I realized I was reading far more paranormal romances than contemporary. Being a strong believer in writing the sorts of things you love to read, I decided to have a go. And loved it right from the start.

I think what really draws me to all forms of speculative fiction is the fact that absolutely anything can happen; the only limitation is your imagination.

2. Always curious about methods, are you a pantser or a plotter?

I’m a total plotter. I’ve tried both methods and if I try and pants it, I get lost in the middle and end up having to go back and do massive rewrites. So now, I plot. I outline and I do a scene by scene breakdown. Then I write a fast first draft. I’ve found it works best for me; I can concentrate on what the characters are doing in a given scene, without worrying about the bigger picture. It also gives me time to get to know the characters before I actually start writing.

3. Do you prefer music or white noise when you write, or is absolute quiet a must?

Quiet isn’t a must, but I don’t tend to listen to music when I write. Not because it distracts me, but because I end up just not noticing it, so there’s no point. Often if I’m stuck, then I’ll put some music on, and it often helps me through the rough patch.

4. You are an avid reader, as well as an author. Can you tell us what author is at the top of your auto-buy list?

It changes, but right now, Patricia Briggs, JR Ward, Jim Butcher, Janet Evanovitch, Karen Marie-Moning, Harlan Coben…

5. When you’re not writing, or reading, what do you like to do with your spare time?

I live on an almond farm in the mountains of Southern Spain. There are often chores to do around the farm; weeding, pruning, picking, making wine (we have a small vineyard). I also have a few dogs and enjoy taking them for walks. And I have a horse called Gencianna, so I ride most days. I’m also quite fond of lying under an almond tree, drinking wine, and admiring the view.

What incredible scenery! It would be hard to get any work done with a view like that. I commend you on your discipline.

6. As a lover of the creative process, where did you get the idea for your current release?

The Blood Hunter series is a mixture of genres. It’s science fiction, with a paranormal twist and a whole load of romance.

I’ve always been a huge fan of space opera, and I absolutely loved Joss Whedon’s Firefly. It was after watching this for the third time that I decided I wanted to write a space adventure. But I also love anything paranormal, so when the pilot of my space ship, El Cazador, kept hinting that he might be a vampire, I thought—why not.

7. Tell us about the series.

The Blood Hunter series is set in the future, where man has fled to the stars and there they have discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Extremely rare and exorbitantly expensive, Meridian is only available to a select few, and a new class has evolved—The Collective. Immensely rich and immortal they rule the civilized universe.

The series follows the adventures of the crew of the space ship, El Cazador, each book focusing on the romance of one crew member. Break Out, book 1, follows the romance of Ricardo Sanchez, owner, pilot and vampire and how he falls for a mysterious blonde, Skylar Rossario, who employs the crew to break her brother out of the Collective’s maximum security prison.

Book 2, Deadly Pursuit, releases this month. The book takes place in the aftermath Break Out, and follows the romance Skylar’s ‘brother’ who just happens to be a werewolf.

What's A Wallbanger?

Most of us know what a wallbanger is. Or what it used to be. A book that was so terribly written, or that had such an unsatisfactory ending, that out of sheer frustration a reader would either literally or figuratively, throw it against the wall.

With the advent of ereaders, and tablet computers, I'm thinking we need a new term. I don't know about you, but I've come across a couple novels I would consider wallbangers recently. In light of the cost of my handy, dandy portable reading device, I practice restraint and don't toss it across the room.

But that doesn't negate the fact that there are still books that raise that emotion. So what do we call them now?

Is there a new phrase I'm not aware of? Or can we think of one?

What do we call the modern day wallbanger? Using a term that's acceptable in a PG13 situation, of course.

Novel Work – Excuse Me, Do I Know You?

In honor of this being NaNo month and all (no, I’m not doingit this year, but keep it between us, okay?) I thought a little novel workwould be appropriate for all the editing that will be done next month. And whatgood is a great plot without awesome characters.

Don’t you just love great characters? When I read a storywith brilliantly written characters, it’s like I’m part of their world, sweptaway for a few moments from my own. Their problems become fascinating, theirpain grips me, and their happiness lightens my heart. I remember them longafter I’ve finished reading. Long enough in fact, to buy the next book thatvery same author writes.

As an author, wouldn’t you like to be able to writecharacters that are able to capture readers with seemingly little or no effort?Me too. So much so in fact, I find myself constantly reading books on the subject.And here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way.

1. Know Your Characters

This is number one because to me, it’s the most important. Thissounds simple doesn’t it? Everyone gets to know their characters in differentways. Whether you use a character bio, astrological charts, or a check list,you as the author, need to know your characters past. While this may nottransfer in so many words to the reader, it will show in the way your characterresponds to other characters, events, stressful circumstances, and sexualsituations.

If you think about the lives of real people, everyone hasfaced challenges that shape who they are, and who they become. It’s nodifferent for your imaginary people.

2. Know Their Place in the Story

What I mean by this is that each character has a role toplay. Whether its hero, heroine, villain, secondary, or just a walk on, youmust understand how they will interact with other characters. This will serveas a guide to how well you must know them, and enable you bring forth certainaspects of their personality that will not only move the story forward, butwill also resonate with readers.

3. Understand Their Motivation

What do your characters want? Again, this is for you theauthor. You must have a clear idea what your characters goal is, in order toget it across to your reader in an entertaining manner. This is where you canreally get into the deep point-of-view of your character, and pull the readerinto the story. This is where reader empathy for characters begins. If the goalis not clear, your character could end up wandering around lost in the desert,and your reader will be lost. So lost in fact, that they try another author thenext time.

4. Conflict, Conflict, Conflict

If you know your characters personalities well enough, andtheir motivation is clear enough, you’ll see immediately if your conflict isbelievable. If it’s not, don’t try to fake it. Readers won’t buy it. And tocoin a phrase used a lot these days, let’s be clear: A Misunderstanding Is NotConflict. Can a misunderstanding add depth to an already established conflict?Sure, if handled carefully. It can also add humor, and entertainment value. Butby itself, it is boring. Totally.

One of the biggest mistakes an author can make, IMO, is tonot know their characters. As your story progresses, if you find you are havingtrouble with your story being slow to start, sagging in the middle, or perhapsnot having the emotional black moment that you’d hoped for, take a good longlook at your characters. Review who they are, their place in the story, theirgoals, and the conflict. If you are willing to be honest with yourself, there’sa good chance you’ll be able to pinpoint the issue.

This week I’d like to introduce author Janet French. She’s written an epic fantasy that has something for everyone. Welcome to Fox Tales, Janet. Let’s get started, shall we?

Thanks Sutton. It’s good to be here.

1. Do you write full time, or do you have an evil day job?

I am not very diligent so I don’t think I would enjoy writing full time, I need people and variety. I am lucky to have worked for myself for the last twenty years and I love my work. I keep a craft shop so I am obliged to embroider or knit all day until a customer comes in, then I can talk about crafts. Pretty good! The shop will be quieter over winter so I should be able to write some days. If I don’t we will never know what happens next in the Cardanon Chronicles and I would like to find out myself. I only work off a very broad outline!

2. When you write, do you feel more comfortable writing in the same place, such as an office or desk, or can you write anywhere?

Anywhere, as long as I have a keyboard and a screen! Can’t get on with that papery stuff.

3. Do you prefer music, other noise, or total silence when the creative juices are flowing?

Silence please, otherwise my mind wanders. It really doesn’t need any encouragement. I can just about keep up the Twitter addiction without slowing the writing down.

4. When you’re not writing, do you have a favorite non-writing activity?

Crafts, of course, but especially bobbin lace making. That is a hardcore craft for an obsessive personality. I just googled bobbin lace to be sure it was what I thought. Wow! Folks, if you aren’t sure, look it up. This woman is amazing. Bobbin lace is absolutely beautiful!

5. I can’t wait any longer, how did you come up with the idea for this book?

It just grew really. I had been thinking for years about the natural forces that shape the world and the masculine/feminine balance in witchcraft and magic. That led me on to wondering how governments would handle a religious power when it was obvious the power was real and not a faith issue. One day I saw Marka and Genya in their cellar, clear as could be in my mind and just as they are in Chapter 2. After that, well, surely dragons, handsome heroes, cute children, a lot of adventure and a splash of humour is the obvious way to go, don’t you think?

6. Please tell us about your current release.

The Silver House is a House of Power in the city of Cardanon. It is a refuge for the city’s children during the Zashran siege but when the city falls the House is hidden out of this world. A group of refugees from the city, mostly in their teens or younger, escape together and set off to find safety. They face all sorts of adventures as they travel and explore their world and soon realise not only must they warn the world about the Zashran, but the fate of the Silver House is in their hands. Oh, and there is treachery in the Houses of Power, a murder mystery, love stories, battles, magic, politics and loads of history and geography. Something for everyone, surely!

7. What’s next for Janet French?

As far as writing goes I am pushing on as fast as I can with book 2 of the Chronicles, The Ruby Princess, and I am working on some silly stories for my grandsons who seem to like them. As to the rest, I am designing for cross stitch kits and bobbin lace and enjoying keeping shop.

Today we welcome author Lee-Ann Graff Vinson. Hi, Lee-Ann. It’s a pleasure to welcome you to Fox Tales.

Thank you, Sutton. I appreciate you taking the time to host me on your blog.

1. I see that your occupation is freelance writer. That’s very cool. Were you one of those people who started writing when you were very young, or did you figure it out later in life?

Although, I loved to write as a child and have many stories tucked away in a folder, it never occurred to me that I could do it full-time. When I quit my “real” job to be a stay-at-home-Mom, I thought perhaps I could take up where my childhood talents left off. After all, writing is something I could do at home, and most days wouldn’t even have to get out of my jammies.

I began writing my first novel when my daughter was six-months old, and completed it a month before I had my son (almost three years later). I quickly found out writing with small children at home was more complicated than working a “real” job, and jammies were only for bedtime.

I tried my hand at freelance, but the rejections weren’t to my liking –– neither was writing what someone else wanted me to write. I’m a bit strong-willed that way.

I guess my occupation should say “lucky to be a writer”. It is my passion, my release. When I write my mind fills with characters, doing and saying things I can only dream about in real life. And, just like in real life, I cry when they are sad and laugh when the sarcasm oozes across the PC screen. I may not ever see my name on the best-seller list, but writing makes me happy. And every family knows, ‘when Momma’s happy, everybody’s happy’.

2. Do you prefer silence when you write, or would you rather have your favorite soundtrack?

For the most part, my background noise used to consist of my children fighting with each other or the snoring dog. If I did have music on the radio, I would catch myself singing along to my favorite songs, completely distracted from the writing or editing process.

However, recently I discovered a website called AccuRadio. With this station, I can pick and choose my music theme according to my mood. And, oddly enough, I am able to concentrate better with it.

I just finished editing and re-writing my latest e-book to be published, called ‘Love and Liberty’. My writing is typically military motivated as it is a topic close to my heart. I switched from modern rock classics for the scenes that needed more energy or drama, to light R&B for the sexy, romantic bits. I think it actually enhanced my writing. I believe I’ve found the ultimate writing tool!

3. How did you come up with the idea for your current release?

Well, in the last decade, so many marriages have ended in divorce over one thing or another -- one of these being social sites on the Internet. So, I thought I would write about what would happen if you ever got to meet your online lover face to face. It seemed a timely topic and one perhaps people could relate to.

4. Tell us about your book.

When Callie takes the red-eye home to surprise her husband for their anniversary, she finds the surprise is on her. She watches as a blond tart in six-inch heels, teeters out from her home and toward a cherry-red Mustang, which is parked in her spot.

Enraged, Callie does the only thing she can do. She drives to her favorite coffee house, scrolls through divorce lawyers who claim to eat cheating husbands for breakfast, and cries. Her only consolation is, Christian, a Marine, whom she befriended on a chat site almost a year earlier.

While waiting for her marriage to end, Callie agrees to finally meet Christian in person. She was a woman in control, but the mere touch of this man had her begging for more. Christian was only too happy to oblige, leaving Callie agreeing with the motto ‘The Few And The Proud’. She had never experienced a man, who could make her see stars, but Christian did his duty and did it well.

Unhappy circumstances had brought them together. A week of sexual bliss made it impossible for them to part, leaving them to wonder how they could, once again, test the hands of fate.

Beach with a view of the mountains, preferably at sunset. I live in Vancouver, it’s what I’m used looking at. It sounds divine!

6. Wine or chocolate?

Both. Never write without either. I’m just a gal who wants it all. Amen! I'm with you on that one.

7. What’s next for Lee-Ann?

Right now, I’m working on edits to my next novel, ‘Love and Liberty’. It is a military suspense romance that takes place in Iraq. After that, I have a novel I’m currently working on which is set in Afghanistan. I’ve also signed up for NaNoWriMo starting November 1st. We shall see how that ends up. It’s my first year doing it. I have also started doing reviews for Great Minds Think Aloud. Crazy busy? Maybe, but I cherish every second of it. After all, isn’t happiness in life what we all strive for?

Flower Child

Today we welcome author Sheila Deeth. She's going to chat with us about her new release, Flower Child. This is a very interesting story, so get comfortable, and we'll get right to it. Here's Sheila to tell us what her story's about.

Have youever told someone you’re a “wannabe writer,” or worse, that you don’t reallyhave a job? Friends would say to me, “You write, so you’re a writer,” but itnever seemed that simple when it came to answering the question, “What do youdo?” I got really brave though at a restaurant recently. “I’m a writer,” saidI; then the questioner asked, “What do you write?” I told her I had an ebookcoming out—my beloved Flower Child. Andthen she said, “What’s it about?” so I struggled to reply.

Of course Iknow what happens in Flower Child. I know it’s about… a mother who miscarries her first pregnancy and can’t quite let go ofthe memory. She feels like it’s disloyal to love her unborn child when she’sgot a real child to care for—oh, and the real child couldn’t exist if thepregnancy hadn’t miscarried because… Luckily the lady asking was a)patient, and b) hungry, so she stayed at the table while we waited for desert.

But was thatreally what she wanted to know? It’s the topic of my book I guess, a startingpoint, an ordered (or slightly disordered) set of scenes. But a story’s surelymore than just the sum of its events, just like being a writer’s more thancreating shopping lists. Maybe she meant, “Why does your story matter?” ratherthan just, “What happens?” And maybe I should have spent longer thinking ofanswers before rushing to speak.

So now I’mtouring the internet with Flower Childand asking myself, why does it matter? It matters to me because I wrote it ofcourse—but I had to have a reason for setting it down. It matters, perhaps,because it explores a relationship I never quite resolved—the one between amother and the child that might have been. It matters because it looks foranswers to questions that run round my mind—do unborn babies really have souls?Can I mourn the child I never saw? And it matters because Angela’s quest foridentity isn’t really so different from mine, or anyone else’s. We all want toknow who we are, where we fit in, and why we’re here. We want ourselves to havesome importance, to make a mark in the greater scheme of things, and for thatto happen, we have to search inside ourselves and learn who’s behind the mask.

Angelawears the mask of someone who doesn’t believe she exists. Megan wears the maskof a mother who’s convinced she’s not good enough. I wear the mask of a writersometimes, storyteller, Sunday school teacher, mother, daughter, wife… so manymasks.

What’s Flower Child about? Identity, I think,which may well be the theme in quite a lot of my stories. It’s a tale ofcharacters searching for truth behind their masks, for meaning, and for self.In the end, Flower Child’s abouttaking risks and stepping out into the world. It’s about realizing we don’tknow it all, and accepting ourselves as lessimportant, less wise, less perfect even, in order to find thetruth that we’re more important thanwe think.

Christmas Knight

With fall in mid-swing, winter isn't far behind. In an effort to make it a little more enjoyable, I'd like to introduce my shiny new short story. If you're waiting in the dentist or doctor's office, riding the metro to work, or waiting in line for that perfect holiday gift, this will help the time fly.

This story has a special place in my heart because it's the only one to have ever come to me in the middle of the night, complete. With names, a title, everything. Which is down right out of the ordinary in my world. But it's exactly as I wanted it to be, just a little bit of sunshine. Enjoy!

Fall Favorites

Fall is one of myfavorite times of the year. The temperate days, the cool nights. The transformationof the leaves to from green to brilliant crimson, orange, or yellow. We’relucky we have some that change to a deep red that looks more purple than anyother color. I spend a lot of time on the deck this time of year. Just watchingthe leaves change.

A couple of theneighbors have these pumpkin displays that come in rows with all differentsorts of faces on them. And they’re always lit from dusk to dawn. You can’thelp but smile when you see them. Bales of straw with mums and stacks of realpumpkins are my absolute favorite.

I go out of my wayto find odd looking gourds to put in a dish on the table. Tables remind me of baking.It’s time to think about what to give out for Halloween, and what to serve forThanksgiving dinner. In between now and then, I’ll be practicing my recipes toensure they’ll taste good on the big day.

Another thing Ifeel compelled to do starting in the fall and over the winter is either takewriting classes, and or read books on craft. Just to keep the saw sharp, as itwere. Maybe it’s because we’re indoors more. Who knows?

I’ve signed up foran online class with the Northeast Ohio chapter of RWA, entitled Fast Draft: ABook In Two Weeks. It sounds like something that could really help myproductivity. I’ll keep you posted.

Another recentpurchase is The Fire in Fiction by Donald Maass. The front of the book reads - passion,purpose, and techniques to make your novel great. Hey, who am I to argue? I’mlooking forward to reading it. There’s always lots of room for improvement.

If It's Monday It Must Be Murder

Welcome to the very first Fan Friday. I'm honored to have author Kathleen S. Allen to start things off. So let's get right to it, shall we?

1. You’ve been writing your entire life. As someone who started writing for publication later in life, I find this fascinating. Were you able to make a living at it right off, or did you have to have other jobs, on the side. If so, what did you do?

No,I’ve only been able to make some monies in the past year when I put my books upon Kindle. I would say that I’ve only been serious about trying to make aliving from writing since 2004 when I decided to get a Master’s in English toimprove my writing. I took all the creative writing classes they offered!

I’ve done a variety of jobs since I was eighteen. Waitress, factory worker, bookstore clerk, bakery clerk, office worker, document translator from French to English, costume shop manager, college professor, high school teacher, tutor, substitute teacher, nurse, actress, movie extra, editor. I probably forgot one or two! I am not yet at the point where I can quit my day job and just be a writer full-time. Right now I am teaching online as an income supplement. My dream job would be to teach creative writing at a college. BTW I have seven degrees, two bachelor degrees (education and nursing), four Master’s (education, social work, nursing and English) and one doctorate (in nursing). I recently started a MFA program and hope to complete that so I can find the teaching job I want.

2. At your level of experience, you can probably write anywhere, but what would make a writing day perfect for you? Do you prefer a specific place or atmosphere before you can write?

I usually write at home on my laptop at the kitchen table. I have a great view of some trees (although I wish I was looking at the ocean or at least a lake). I like to write at cafes, too, especially during NaNoWriMo (more on this later in the interview) at the write-ins.

3. Over years, has writing gotten any easier? If so, how? Are there things you still struggle with?

I wouldn’t say easier, different and better. I started out writing poetry and progressed to short stories from there. When I first sat down to write a novel (at the age of 17-a gothic romance) I had no idea if I could do it. It seemed so daunting to put all those words down on paper!!! It took me a while, but I did it. Once I wrote that first novel I realized that determination is a big part of writing. Well, that and talent! LOL. I remember my seventh grade English teacher (Mrs. Mahoney—wherever you are, thank you) telling me I could be a writer. I never forgot that even when life circumstances got in the way of my writing. I’ve learned a lot about what not to do and that is valuable. I also learned that I like doing other parts of writing besides just the writing, making book trailers, designing covers, promoting and marketing my books are all things I enjoy doing. I started out as a theatre major as an undergraduate and have been in many plays so being on stage---so to speak---doesn’t faze me. Plus when you lecture in front of 200 students you get over stage fright pretty fast!

4. You have an awesome writing resume. I stand in awe. You write Young Adult fantasy, poetry, adult fiction, flash fiction, short stories and lyric essays. Is there anything at all that you haven’t written yet, that you’d like to write?

Thank you. I like to challenge myself so that’s why I try different genres. I haven’t written a hard-core Science Fiction novel yet. A couple of short stories but no novel. I’d love to do one and may yet. I haven’t done a biography or memoir either but have no interest in either of those.

5. When not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Take care of two very high maintenance cats!!!! I read a lot and have my favourite TV shows. I am a huge Joss Whedon fan and love to watch anything he does or did. Firefly is still one of my favourite shows! And, of course, Buffy. Other faves include Blood Ties (Tanya Huff), Dark Angel, Wonderfalls and anything on BBC America. I’m also a Dr. Who fan (David Tennant is the “real” Doctor), Being Human (miss Aidan Turner-*sniff*), Torchwood (John Barrowman is my celebrity crush!!! He’s so awesome, he melts my heart every time I hear him sing). Here’s a link to my fave song by him I Owe it All to You:

I am also a fan of Masterpiece Mystery and am watching the Inspector Lewis shows. I like the way BBC does Jane Austen and have all those to watch, over and over and over. Especially Persuasion.

6. Most authors are avid readers. Which author is at the top of your auto-buy list?

I read a novel every night before bed. I love to read cozy mysteries, especially those set in England. The latest ones I am reading are the Cotswold mysteries by Rebecca Tope. I just finished reading Laurie Halse Anderson’s YA novel, Fever 1793. I have a pile of books on my nightstand most of them are YA. I read the cozies on my iPhone with the Kindle app.

7. Would you tell us about your latest release? By the way, I love the title.

Thanks. Sure, since I read mysteries I wanted to try and write one. It took me two years to finish it and I put it away for a few months because I was stuck. I got it back out and was able to revise it so it was a much better book. Here’s the info on it:

8. What inspired this particular book?

I was inspired to write a mystery because I love reading the cop mysteries where the main character is a female detective or private investigator. I wanted to try my hand at one.

Excuse my interruption, Kathleen, but while we're on the subject of your current release, here's my review:

Being a cop is not only what you do, it’s who you are.

Because of her injuries, Mel is forced to give up her day job. But she still acts and thinks, like a cop. So when her best friend’s daughter turns up dead, it only seems natural for Cindy to ask Mel to look into things.

Although she’s not privy to the formal investigative details and still recovering from her own injuries, Mel manages to make things happen. Much to the dismay of her former partner, who is currently assigned by the police department to handle the enquiry into the matter of the young girl’s death.

Ms. Allen has crafted a tale ripe with twists, turns, and red-herrings that will keep you guessing. It’s filled with fully drawn characters woven into complex emotional situations they can’t just walk away from, but must deal with. And how they do it makes this story a very entertaining read. If you’re looking for a well written whodunit to add to your reading pleasure, this book is it.

9. What’s next for Kathleen S. Allen?

I am in the process of editing my faeries v. humans novel, LORE OF FEI that is being published by Muse It Up Publishing in April, 2012. I just finished the first edit and sent it off to the editor. As soon as I get a cover I’ll do a book trailer for it. I am getting ready for NaNoWriMo, this is the competition that has you write a 50,000 word novel for the month of November. I did it for the first time last year (LORE OF FEI) and loved it. I already have my outline for my book. In NaNoWriMo you are allowed to plot out your book ahead of time but not write it. Here’s my outline: 19th Century woman falls in love with a man who may or may not be a vampire. Ta Dah!

I am also working on a YA historical novel. I finished it but I have to edit it yet. I did another YA historical novel about the illegitimate son of Henry VIII of England called Fitzroy: The Boy Who Would be King and I enjoyed doing the research for it. It’s the first time I wrote from a male point of view and I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on it. Here’s the link to it on Kindle along with the book trailer:

Do Multiple Genres Equal Multiple Pen Names?

This discussion goes on and on. I’ve seen it for years.And in the way of human beings, now it’s affecting me, so I’m requesting input.

I understand the difference between having a pen namefor standard romance versus erotic romance, but I have to wonder, is that lineblurring? Everybody knows who J.D. Robb is. And no, La Nora doesn't write erotica, but Eve can be quite the spicy character. J.R. Ward followers know she alsowrites under Jessica Bird and both names are on her website. Let’s not forgetthe fantabulous Sylvia Day, aka Livia Dare and S.J. Day.

Granted, I have nowhere near the following that theseawesome authors have, for me it’s more a question of getting started on theright foot.

Now that I’ve been writing for a while, I find myselfwanting to try my hand at other genres. But do I really need to have aselection of names, one for each?

If so, can I put them all on one web page? If astandard romance reader discovers I write erotica under another name or fantasy,paranormal or whatever, will they be put off?

I know some of my writer friends have more than one penname. If you had it to do over again, would you still use more than one name?

Ultimately this will be my decision, but terrificpeople that you are, you’ve never steered me wrong yet. So speak up. Tell mewhat you think.

Happy Monday, everyone! I thought we’d start this week offwith a bang.

I’ve been lucky enough to interview a fabulous author and friend,Aubrie Dionne. We'll chat about her writing, and her new release which I've been lucky enough to review. And without further ado, let’s get to the good stuff.

1. Whathas surprised you the most about being a published author?

Oh boy, that’s a good question! I didn’t realize how manyfriends I would make along the way, (like you!), and how supportive they wouldbe. I love my critique partners and my beta readers, and I never feel alone inthe process.

Ireally enjoy reading other people’s works (Like Christmas Holly- an awesomeebook!), and it’s so neat I get to talk to the authors behind them. J

2. Do you need to be in a specific place or atmospherebefore you can write?

Iused to, but now that I have to write to meet deadlines, not so much anymore!Was it Stephen King that said something like, “amateurs wait for inspiration,while the rest of us get up and go to work!” ?

3. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

A little of both. I know the beginning andthe end, and certain key elements in the middle, and then I “pants it” the restof the way!

4. Since your day job involves music, do you prefer music orquiet when you write?

I prefer quiet, relaxing music (likenew age) without words. I listen to Itunes radio. My favorite station is radioGaia. J They speak in some other language, soI have no idea what the announcer is saying!

5. When not working or writing, what do you like to do inyour spare time?

I love to watch movies! Fantasy and scifi are my favorites (no surprise there, right?). I also spend a lot of timewith my family because all of my three siblings and both my parents live aboutten to twenty minutes away. I have a new nephew, Evan, about to turn one thismonth!

6. Most authors are avid readers. Which author is at the topof your auto-buy list?

I love Patricia McKillip. My favoritebook of hers in Winter Rose. It reads like a fairytale, which each sentenceflowing like music to my ears.

7. Would you tell us about your latest release?

Paradise 21 is inspired by the globalpopulation food shortage crisis going on today. I wondered what would happenwhen the Earth becomes uninhabitable, and came up with a series based on colonyships seeking alternate worlds.

8. What inspired this particular book?

Ummmm….I have to say Star Wars, and theplanet of Tatooine. I grew up watching the old Star Wars movies over and overagain, so I think it’s been reconstituted into my DNA. J (Not a totally bad thing, heh?)

9. What’s next in Author Aubrie’s world?

I just finished the sequel to Paradise21 titled Tundra 37. It’s about another colony ship that is forced to land onan ice planet to survive. I’m working on a tie in novella to the series calledA Hero Rising. This novella will chronicle the fall of Earth as the colonyships leave and the start of the space pirates! (And there’s even zombies!!!)

Novel Work #2 – Setting

Working out of town usually gives me time to catch upon movie going, since there’s not much to do once the job site is closed forthe day. And depending on what time of day or night that happens, I’m prettymuch mentally trashed. So actually it’s become kind of a special treat. Especiallysince movies have gotten so frickin’ expensive!

Thinking about some of the movies I’ve seen recently,made me very aware of how much of a part setting plays in the story line. Istruggle with this sometimes in my own stories. The important things thatusually drive a story are plot line, characters, and macguffins. But what’sholding all this up? The setting.

Some days I find I’ve written several pages, and beingtied up with characters have not added in any detail beyond the rudimentaryabout where these people are and how it affects the outcome of their schemes.Then I have to go back and layer in specific things which will enhance thestory, making it richer and hopefully more captivating.

My recent viewings have included the last Harry Potter,Captain America, and Cars 2. I mean really, given my line of work, how could Inot go see Cars? Each movie is distinctive in its setting. Imagine for a momenthow awful it would be if you didn’t have the eloquence of the background detailas the supporting cast.

Where would Harry be without the fabulous world ofHogwarts? And Captain America without the war? So not happening. Not to mentiona world where everything revolves around cars that talk.

If you are searching for a way to make your story standout, don’t overlook the obvious. Don’t just gloss over the setting, assumingthat readers will ‘get it’ because it’s set in a world we all know. Take thetime to add the details that make it special. Not only will readers thank youfor it, but it will make your story shine.

Some Days

If you are a writer, you probably do the same thing I do, which is follow lots of marketing blogs geared towards authors. Lately there have been a plethora of articles on how best to market one’s work. In other words, build the best possible platform to get others to notice your writing, and perhaps buy something you are selling.

Here’s what you need to do according to the pros:

1. Get personal – people want to know what a writer’s life is really like.

2. Be professional – you are a professional, keep things on a professional level, don’t whine on about your personal life.

3. Get involved in social media. Make sure you are all over facebook, twitter, google+, tumblr, etc.

4. Don’t depend on social media. What if the powers that be decide you’ve done something wrong and delete your page? Then where will you be.

5. Be real. These days’ people want to be around people who are authentic.

6. Don’t be too real. Nobody cares what you had for lunch. They want what they are having.

After reading all that, the only thing I want is an adult beverage. Now that things are clear as mud, the best thing you can do is work to build a balanced marketing platform. Don’t be scared off or intimidated by all the advice that’s out there. Use your common sense. No matter where you choose to place your efforts, building a following is an investment over time.

Sleepless Night

Usually Isleep pretty well. Working hard does that for me. But like anyone else, on occasionI don’t, because I have things on my mind. Except I don’t realize they are,until the damn middle of the night. Why couldn’t I lay awake in the beginning?Or wake up early thinking about stuff?

No. It’sgot to be 2:30 in the frickin’ morning. Can you tell I’m grumpy today? So notone of those people who goes blithely about their day on four hours of sleep. I’man eight hour girl, and if I don’t get it, shit happens. Usually to me, so you’vegot nothing to worry about.

The weirdthing about this time though is it wasn’t the usual stuff that woke me. Notkids and their troubles, business matters, bills, the things we all worry about.This time, it was a story.

The plotline appeared fully formed, the hero and heroine showed up with personalities,jobs and everything. The title even came through clear as day. I was so surprisedI actually laid there and thought it through again to make sure I got it right,and then spent time thinking about the research I’d need to do, etc.

I’vestarted a file, and carefully written down all the information so I don’t loseit. And hopefully I’ll get it written over the next couple months. I guess I don’thave much choice. It’s not a type of story I’ve ever thought about writing, andduring my waking hours this plot line wouldn’t occur to me. Which makes it evenmore interesting.

This hasnever, ever happened to me before. And it’s left me a little unsettled, to saythe least. For the writers out there, does this happen to you too?

Novel Work #1 – Start at the Beginning

Wow. Thatsounds simple, doesn’t it. But where exactly is the beginning?

This is aquestion I have to work through every time I start a new story. Over time I’velearned that there are a few things I need to know before I can answer thisquestion. Please remember, I’m a die-hard plotter. So if you’re a pantser, orjust not as anal as I am, your mileage may vary.

The firstthing I need to know is my characters. I need to know who they are. Their goalsand their motivation for reaching said goals. I also need to know what themajor conflicts are. I say conflicts because personally, I like an angst-ystory so I want both internal and external conflict. And I’m talking skeletonsat this point for plot because everything is subject to refinement, but ithelps to have an idea where you’re headed so you can find your way.

During theprocess of critiquing and judging writing, I’ve noticed this is something newwriters struggle with. They feel the need to get everything ‘set up’ before thestory starts. That way the reader will understand completely when the actionstarts in chapter five.

Imaginemeeting someone for the first time, and right after you’ve been introduced theperson starts telling you their life story, from birth up until the moment youmeet. Kudos to you if you can last through the whole thing. It’s an exaggerationto be sure, but you get the point. It’s boring! Isn’t it more fun to learnabout people a bit at a time? The thrill of discovery makes things moreexciting.

Not onlythat, but its way easier as a writer to just ‘set up’ everything. It takes workand creativity to delicately weave in the back story, setting details, andpersonality traits. But it also gives you, and most importantly the reader, abetter reading experience.

The idealplace to start your story, IMO, is when the hero/heroine gets the call toaction. In other words, at the point where their life changes forever. It canbe good, or bad, and the character may recognize it immediately or not, but asa writer, you need to. You need to understand that after this particularmoment, be it a choice made, a disaster unfolding, or circumvented, from hereon out, they will be different. Change is the catalyst that drives the opening.

And thereader shouldn’t have to wait for it.

How youportray that change will be up to you. After all, it is your story.

Bowing to the Inevitable

It’s something I’ve known for a while now. Although people deal with it every day and are just fine, I didn’t want to face it. Call me vain if it makes you feel better, but it’s not vanity. Finally, it was fear that made me do it.

My eyes have been doing strange things for the past couple years. Store bought ‘readers’ solved the problem up until recently. Once the blurred vision and headaches started, it became more difficult to put off going to the eye doctor. It’s not that I’m afraid of doctors, it’s just that visiting them takes up so much time. Time I’d really rather being doing something else with.

But the other day, I had a thought. Imagine! If I keep screwing with my eyes, there could be something wrong I don’t know about. And if it gets worse, someday I might not be able to read. That one thought stopped me cold. I actually thought about it.

A world where I wouldn’t be able to read the letters printed in ink on the pages of a book collection I’ve tended and grown lovingly over the years. Or worse yet, flip pages with the touch of a button on my ereader without changing the font to extra-large. Okay, insert vain here. I tried the extra-large font already. Needless to say, this wild imagining got me on the phone for an appointment, and then got my dumb ass to the vision clinic, pronto.

So, yeah, I’ve got to wear glasses now. They should arrive in about ten days. I’m thrilled. My eyes are healthy, just not as young as they used to be. I guess that means they match the rest of me.

How does that song go? ‘I ain’t as good as I once was…’

About Cats

The title is no joke. If you are a person who believes the only good use for a cat is a doorstop, you can stop reading. Otherwise, let’s continue. Shall we?

Lately I’ve become aware of some interesting feline behavior in our household. It’s well, dare I say it? Almost canine. We’ve had our cats going on seven years now. They were one year old rescue cats when we got them. The first few years, they exhibited normal cattitudes about everything.

Now, if we’re in the house, they must be in the same room with us, or they will not stop calling until they are. Much like a three year old. Or a puppy. Not only do they come when called, they respond with a particular sounding ‘meow’. Each one seems to recognize its name.

If they are about to do something they shouldn’t, like get on the counter top, we can point at them, make an “Ah-ah!” sound and they stop what they are doing, and sometimes run the other direction. Again, much like a child, or a dog.

When we have been away, and come home they are both waiting at the door, and ‘talk’ to us as we enter. I find the whole noise making thing very interesting because they never, and I mean NEVER do it to each other. It seems like the longer we have them, the more interactive and personable they become.

And I must add that none of this is motivated by basic necessities such as food, water, litter, etc. They don’t get treats because one has a very sensitive stomach. And will not tolerate any of the several we’ve tried over the years. Food and water are available twenty-four seven so we’ve never had the ‘omg, feed me or I’m going to die!’ issue.

Right now, they are both on my desk sleeping. They seem to be normal healthy cats. But they are the first ones we’ve had so I have no idea if everyone else’s cats do this or not. And that’s the crux of this post. I’ve always heard cats behave in a particular independent fashion which is why a lot of people don’t care for them. Ours don’t seem to do that anymore. Do your cats interact with you in a way that’s really not catlike?

Hey, All! Freshly showered and back from the evil day job which tends to take over my life at times. One thing I do love about all the traveling though is meeting great people and making exciting discoveries along the way. Here’s the latest one.

Have you ever been to Fairhope, Alabama? If not, you should make it a tourist destination if you love beautiful, quaint resort towns, lined with streets of unique shops, and galleries. The street corners are planted with amazing foliage. It was so pretty that when we stopped at the first stoplight, we didn’t go because we were staring in awe at the flowers. Needless to say, the people behind us honked a reminder. Check out the link if you want to see some photos. These are from a Fairhope website, I didn’t take them.

One of the best things about the trip however, was MasterJoes. When trying to decide where to dine for dinner, our clients suggested it. Being sushi lovers, we’ve eaten sushi at a lot of places around the country. And let me tell you, this beats anything we’ve had thus far.

Their website isn’t quite finished, but there’s enough information on it to give you a peek.

If you are ever in southern Alabama, it’s worth the detour to try this establishment. The prices are reasonable, and it’s easy to find since it’s on the main street of Fairhope. The service is outstanding, the staff is very friendly, and the food, well, I’m running out of adjectives. Let me just say it was so good, we went there twice!!

Do Your Reading Tastes Change?

In case you’re not on Goodreads, I’ll tell you I’m currently reading An Echo In the Bone by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since Outlander, and I’ve read most of her books more than once. But I confess, I probably won’t post a revue of this book and here’s why.

She would get plus five, for research. As an author, I empathize and totally appreciate the intensive research it must have taken to write another fantastically done period novel.

She would also get plus five for her dynamic prose. I read some of the passages of description or dialogue, and just marvel at the word usage, and the imagery she provides. It’s amazing.

And the characters. It’s like meeting your oldest and dearest friends for tea. Friends you haven’t seen in years, and are thrilled to welcome back into your life.

With me, you just know there’s a ‘but’ coming don’t you? Right now I’m about a third of the way through, and it’s the first time in a long time I feel like I might not finish a book. And one by a beloved author? Well that just makes me sad. And makes me ponder.

It took several days of ruminating to come to the conclusion, it’s not her. Nor anything she’s written. It’s me. Over the years apparently, my tastes have changed. Maybe it’s reading one too many LKH books. But really, is there any such thing as too many? I guess these days, I’m looking for a fast paced, action packed, thriller type of story.

I’m in a bit of a quandary. As an author I have nothing but raves for her dedication to her work, and for the product that dedication produces. But as a reader, I’m really not enjoying it this time around. And it’s not her fault. So rather than write a less than stellar review, which she in no way deserves, I’ll just say nothing. And that leaves me feeling a little empty somehow.

The Lianhan Shee. Powerful. Immortal. Bored to tears, and still in possession of the heart and soul of a woman. Which means she struggles, just like all of us, with the needs, wants, and challenges these things bring to her existence.

Aidan is a wounded hero. And a fine one at that. He’s honorable, funny, loving, strong, and imperfect. Everything a woman, even an immortal one, would want in a hero.

If you haven’t guessed by now, this is my favorite of all four stories. To me, and I’m from America mind you, it embodies everything I find romantic about Irish folklore.

Ms. Grace has beautifully rendered a complete cast of fanciful, yet realistic characters including feisty leprechauns, fairies, immortals, and mortals, both bad and good. And dropped them right down into a modern days setting, where they fit perfectly.

Personally I think you should read all four stories, or you’re missing out. But if you only have time to read one, this is it.

Colin Keane is fierce, proud, passionate, and torn by his loyalties. Pulled into a dark and deadly world, he wants to make his choices count. To do it, he sacrifices much. When he finds a woman who soothes his battered soul, he is faced with yet another painful choice.

Ms. Forrest penned a gripping tale that grabbed me on page one, and wouldn’t let go. Her characters are so well drawn and lifelike, I could totally see this plotline playing out in today’s modern world. If you are a fan of romantic suspense, and like a little danger to spice up the passion, I highly recommend this story.

A wonderfully bawdy tale, Greens Fees is the most erotic of the four stories. Ms. Black has created a thoroughly believable situation and peopled it with characters that shine in their ambition to do good, even though they’ve made mistakes in the past. The story is touching in the way that it showcases just how difficult living with ones choices can be.

Mallory Bird is a determined young woman who’s trying to do the right thing, even though it would be far easier not to. Her character arc is perfect for such a short story. She grows and learns just as we all do, by trial and error, with the support of good people around us.

Green Sloan is a thoroughly reluctant hero, and I just love those. He’s a good man who’s made mistakes and is unwavering in his desire to make amends. While his methods are typically male, his heart shines through even though he’d rather hide it behind a pint of Guinness.

This story is the perfect read for a light bit of spicy entertainment. Since Ms. Black is one of my CP’s you could say I’m partial. What I say is, I believe this is the best work she’s ever done, and you should read it.

This story epitomizes everything I love about reading romance. Kelsey Donovan is a heroine worthy of the term. In true romantic form, she’s doing something totally outrageous in an effort to get what she wants. At the same time, she discovers something she didn’t expect.

Seamus McKinley is a wonderfully drawn man. He’s sexy, sensitive, and yet strong enough to be the perfect hero. In true Irish form, once he finds his woman, he makes things happen. Who wouldn’t want a man like that?

This story is pure entertainment. Ms. Below has done a fabulous job of crafting true to life characters in a totally believable setting, who doggedly pursue what they want, while struggling to understand what it is they need. And in the realizing of that need, Ms. Below penned a delightful tale.

Awesome Short Stories Week

Usually, I’m not much of a short story person. I used to say it was kind of like reading a commercial.

Until I began to write. Now, I have the utmost appreciation for people who write short stories. Because I understand just how much work goes into crafting a story with vivid characters, a gripping setting, a fast paced plot, and doing it in a few short pages.

With a short story you don’t have time to drone on and on about everything down to the last detail. You have to grab the reader’s attention and hold it, immediately.

With that being said, I was fortunate enough to come across a great collection of short stories recently.

Each one is unique in its storyline, and so well done, in fact, I’ll be featuring all four the rest of this week. So if you’re a short story lover, these are must buys. If you’re thinking, ahh, not so much, I say, give these a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Eight Tips for Getting the Most Out of a Writers Conference/Convention

For most of us, money is always an issue. These days, even more so. If you’re going to spend your hard-earned, scrimped and saved cash to attend a conference you’ll want to get all the bang your buck can hold. Here’s hoping these tips will help.

1. Know why you are attending – Be selective. What can the conference offer you? As writers oftentimes we attend to sell books. But that’s not enough anymore. Are there business/craft/educational opportunities available? Not things you’ve already done, but new fresh subjects that pique your interest, and spark your creativity. Are there editor/agent appointments available? Are they representing publishers you are interested in working with?

Find out beforehand how well the conference is attended. Some people prefer larger conferences while some are more at ease with a smaller group.

2. Address your fears before you go – Don’t let fear keep you from achieving your goals. Crowds make some people very nervous. Talking to total strangers makes other people ill. Have an action plan in place so when you find yourself in what may have been an uncomfortable situation in the past, this time you’ll be able to work through it, or at the very least, make positive steps toward your objectives. Remember, these people aren’t your enemies. More often than not, it’s your own fears that make them seem so. Most of them are here for the same reasons you are, and are dealing with similar issues.

3. Have a plan – Familiarize yourself with the schedule, so you’ll always be on the way to an event, or coming from an event. Have a destination in mind. That way you don’t find yourself aimlessly wandering, not knowing where to go, or what to do with yourself. This is when those monster fears find a foothold. If you run across friends, plans can always be changed.

4. Dress appropriately – Business casual is always a good bet. Even the most bohemian of us need to make a good impression. Yes, you are a creative person at heart. We know you don’t want to be one of those awful, greedy, corporate types. Still, this is business. If you don’t play the game, you can’t win. I’m not saying don’t wear what you are comfortable with, I’m saying just make sure it represents the best of who you are, not who you are when you’re doing laundry. Dress with care, and self-respect. You are worth it.

5. Be prepared to network –We all know writing is solitary. Conferences are about people! Old friends, new friends, acquaintances, and people we’d like to meet. Be sure to have business cards, bookmarks, postcards, something to give people so they will either remember you, or be able to contact you after the conference is over. Not everyone will contact you, but those who want to do business with you will.

6. Volunteer –this is a great way to meet people and make lifelong friends. It’s a safe way to get you out of your comfort zone. You can share an activity with others, and help at the same time.

7. Smile – This sounds crazy, true? But it works. If you’re waiting in line to register for something, smile at the people around you. Be brave, make eye contact. This will make you feel better, and will put them at ease also. And one of you will speak. It will happen. Viola! Instant networking. Even if you’re nervous, or insecure, it will make people think you are enjoying yourself, and they will want some of what you are having. Even if it’s only airspace.

And here’s the last, and what I feel is the most important tip.

Share your passion.

We attend these events because of books. We love them. We are passionate about genres, stories, characters, and authors, all of it. We each have that in common. It’s what gets us out in the first place. And that’s a lot of ground to cover.

Now. Go enjoy yourself. Fill the well. So you can come home and write.

Does anyone know if they exist? Maybe this post should be titled confessions of a reading addict.

When computers first hit the market, everyone proclaimed they would get rid of the paper in our world. Everything would be electronic. Then along came ereaders, and they were going to get rid of hardback and paperback books.

Thus far both have turned out to be bovine efluvium.

Now there is not only a TBR stack or three in my office, there are TBR files on my computer, and my ereader!

Not to mention the actual magazines that come in the mail. I'm not resubscribing, in an effort to actually be more environmentally conscious, but I must have gotten on somebody's list once because I get quite a few. And I've found with some, even if I don't resubscribe, they keep sending them anyway!

Then there are several email newsletters, okay, more than several.

It seems as though everywhere I look there's something to read. If confession is good for the soul, I admit, I'm the cause of this. I had to subscribe, I have to find out the end of the story after reading the blurb, I want to know what the rest of the world is doing. And the way I do this is by reading! And let's not even mention the social networking stuff, egads.

It seems as though these new geeky gadgets have really just tripled the workload, instead of making things disappear. Some days don't you just feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it all? How do you handle it?

Anyone Can Write A Hot Mess

Very few can actually write an entire, entertaining, elegantly crafted novel.

If you are one of those people who think anyone can write a book, I'd agree with you. But writing a good book, that's something different entirely. Are you mulling over the idea of writing a book to cash in on the current self-publishing ebook craze?

Is This What Guys Do?

Have any of you race fans seen the new Denny Hamlin commercial? The search for a link proved fruitless, maybe because it’s still being aired. For those of you who may not know, Denny drives the number 11, NASCAR Sprint Cup, FedEx Toyota Camry, for Joe Gibbs Racing.

The short version is this:

Denny Hamlin in a driveway with his driver’s suit down to his waist. There he stands bare chested, washing his car. He looks up, blows a kiss and says, “It’s Denny time.” Then proceeds to drive a woman around on her errands, fix her a cup of tea while she relaxes, etc. It’s maybe a little corny, but very cute.

The point is, his abs and the rest of his upper body muscle would rival those from the set of the movie 300. I love it. Of course as soon as I mentioned how appealing I thought it was the following conversation took place.

Me: “Oh, wow. Wait. Back up. I want to see that commercial.”

The Man in the House: “With Denny Hamlin? You liked that?”

Me: “Yeah.”

TMH: “Those abs aren’t real.”

Me: “Who cares?”

TMH: “They’re cgi.”

Me: “So? I’m not bringing him home. It’s eye candy.”

TMH: “They’re fake.”

Me, getting irritated: “I don’t care. I like the premise.”

TMH: “But it’s not real.”

Me: “Well, breast implants aren’t real either. Are they?”

Silence.

Perhaps it’s just the thought of a half-naked hottie waiting on me hand and foot. Or, uh, something. *insert wicked smile here* All of you romance writers/readers out there totally get it, I’m sure.

Younger guys aren’t usually attractive to me, but I admit, watching this commercial leaves me feeling a bit cougarish.

Now that I think about it, I’m not even sure what he’s selling. I’d buy it. But maybe I should watch it again to find out. And that’s what led me to wonder, is this what guys do?

Totally Creeped Out

If you follow me on twitter, you’ve heard about the bugs. If not, here’s the short version. Had a wasp invasion the last couple months. Inside. Paper wasps in my office and mahogany wasps in the dining room.

Since I’m the crazy woman you’ll see jumping out of her car in traffic if a bee flies in, a call to the bug man became mandatory. I hated to even call because of the cats, but he assured me they now have an option that is pet friendly. After treating the house, he said the wasps would try to get away from the stuff, get lethargic and go end their lives in an unobtrusive manner.

They’ve gotten away alright. Seems they’ve migrated to the basement. The last couple days, I go down and there are three or four live ones sitting on the floor. This leads the panic stricken lady of the house to step on them immediately, scoop them up and get rid of the evidence.

One day there was only one. I was busy, so I stepped on it and kept going about my business. Yesterday I noticed that it had disappeared. It was okay though because there were three more to take its place. Again with the dancing shoes, late for an appointment those suckers stayed right where they met their end. This morning I went downstairs to get something and noticed that all three little cadavers were gone. I made sure to stop and thank the guy in the house for cleaning up after me.

Deadpan, as only a man can do, he looks at me and says, “I didn’t clean them up, we must have a lizard or a snake down there.”

New Release - Collective Shivers: Can You Spare a Dollar for Japan?

The entire world has been affected in some way by the terrifying events caused by the Sendai earthquake this past March. News stories continue to add more about these devastating events and the tenuous circumstances in Japan.

Upon being bombarded by these news stories, romance and speculative fiction writer L.K. Below could not bear to stand idle. Rather than indulge her feeling of helplessness, she did the only thing she knew how to do: she wrote. Two weeks after the Sendai disaster, the product is a short fantasy story called Collective Shivers.

Plot Bunnies Gone Awry

Help! My plot bunnies are loose.

I picture a brilliant green swath of grass at dusk. The lawn is surrounded by wondrous landscaping. Trees, shrubs and hedges of every shape and size wait patiently, the perfect escape route for wary bunnies.

The cottontails meander to and fro, three, four, and now five! Nibbling delicately on the luscious feast before them.

The moment I step onto the grass, they dart out of my reach. A few more steps forward and poof! They disappear completely. Out of reach and into the waiting camouflage.

The reality is more like this. Usually I’m doing something I can’t stop at the moment, like driving. And into my head pops the best plot thread, either for my current work or lately it’s been some totally brand new ones. This is accompanied by a great deal of frustration later because try as I might, once I‘ve parked the car, I can’t seem to remember them as clearly as they came to me. Some even escape entirely. Drats.

I’m guessing this happens to other writers too. How do you handle it?

Winners Never Quit

By now, you’ve all heard that Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500. Big deal. Don’t know him, don’t care. You’re probably thinking that only idiots drive around in circles anyway, and that’s fine. But it’s not the point.

The point is, he is only twenty years old. This was only his second NASCAR cup race. And to me, one of the highlights is that he was driving for a one car team, owned by the Wood brothers. He took advantage of the opportunity that was offered to him, and found himself in the right place, at the right time on the last lap of the race. And no one can ever take that accomplishment away from him, or the team.

His car isn’t owned by someone with the last name of Hendrick, Roush, or Childress with hundreds of employees and multiple teams to pull information from at his disposal. And his last name isn’t Earnhardt, Johnson, or Gordon, so he didn’t have multiple championship experience to draw upon. And yet, he still won what is considered one of the most important races of all time.

If he’d have spent a good portion of his time worrying about the competition, most likely, he would have quit a long time ago. Because the competition is much better funded, and simply has more of everything it takes to win available to them. But he didn’t. Did he quit because forty-three other guys going two hundred miles an hour wanted the spot he was in? Not just no, hell no. Because he had the passion, the drive to win, and most of all, he believed he could.

How much different is that from where we are as writers? Well, besides the going around in circles part.

Because of all the changes happening in the publishing industry, I’ve been seeing an inordinate amount of ‘woes me, the market is too tough, maybe I’ll quit writing’ posts. If you’ve got your sights set on the big six, you’re right. The market is tight. But not impenetrable. We’re still reading about new contracts every day.

However, it’s my personal opinion FWIW, that the market for writers hasn’t been this good since Nora published Irish Thoroughbred in 1981. And most of you know that history already.

I believe it’s the changes in the publishing industry that have made this possible. If your goal is to get your stories in front of readers, there are now more options than ever. Besides the big six, there are a plethora of Indie publishers, small ePresses, and let’s not forget that it’s never been easier to self-publish. Like it or not, ereaders are changing things.

It’s true most people don’t recognize opportunity because it usually does arrive disguised as hard work. And honestly, sometimes it is grueling. But if it were easy, you wouldn’t be reading this. You’d already be successful right? The window of opportunity won’t last forever. The market will become saturated and it will be much harder to get into any of these currently wide open venues.

If your writing career isn’t where you want it to be, maybe it’s time to take a moment and reassess your goals. Maybe they need to change, maybe not. Only you can answer that question.

Here are two things that Dale Earnhardt senior knew to be true. If you want to quit, quit. Nobody will kiss your ass and beg you to stay. There are a hundred or more people waiting to take your place, and they will step on you if they have to, to get where they are going. And the most important is this –

Winners Never Quit.

Ever. We can’t. It’s the only thing that separates us from the losers.

If you have the passion to write, the drive to be published, the belief in your work, you’ve got what it takes. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Now get out there, and win.

Girls and Gasoline

Excuse me, where’d I put the soapbox? Oh. Right here, next to the day job. Well, let’s get started then. Here’s the scene.

I’m at the gas pump putting gas in the car. At the pump next to me a car pulls up and out pops a teenage girl, cigarette in hand who sashays over to the little booth to pay for her gas.

The attendant says, “Ma’am, you need to put out your cigarette before you pump the gas.”

And she snarls at him, giving the eye-roll that only teens seem to be able to master in such a sneering, who-the-hell-do-you-think-you-are, and why are you in my world, asshole kind of way. So she huffs and puffs and makes a big deal out of putting out her smoke. By dropping it and smashing it with her tiny little platform shoe. Can you say ignition spark three times fast?

Funny, I was thinking of another place to put her shoe. But I digress.

This has happened four times in the last couple weeks. Twice it was the attendant, once it was my partner and once me that mentioned to the lovely ladies that they needed to put away their smokes and then pump gas. And it was at my local station and out of town, in different states. That tells me something is amiss.

Who is teaching these girls about the dangers of gasoline? Does anybody remember that it’s still flammable? I tend to forget myself, familiarity and all that rot.

Without getting all rocket science-y, here’s the short version. Water vapor rises, hydrogen rises, other types of fumes rise and float away on the breeze. Read my lips here, GASOLINE DOES NOT. Gas fumes are heavier than air molecules and they actually fall. They tend to rest near the ground, about thirty inches or so. Right about where Miss Smarty Pants wants to hang her smoke.

Now would it take a particular set of circumstances to set off an explosion? Absolutely. Most of the time there’s enough air movement it’s not an issue. BUT. Do you want your daughter to be the one to find out that the temperature, humidity, and lack of air movement were optimum, at the very moment she’s standing there?

And I’m in no frickin’ hurry to get blown up with her. I’d rather she live through the snarly-face stage to the point where she’s adult enough to like people again.

Burn injuries are horrible. And that’s the truly crappy part. Once it happens, you can’t stop it, and there’s no going back. I’m sorry, or, I was an idiot, doesn’t fix it.

It’s just a guess, but I bet young women put gas in their car way more than they have sex, do drugs, drink and drive, maybe not texting, but you get the idea. Please take a moment and add this to the list.

Vira captured me right away, she’s such a realist and that’s refreshing for a woman in her position. However, like the rest of us, she refuses to give up on her dream of love, no matter what it might cost her. She swept me into the story and before I knew it, I was cheering her on to reach her goals, and holding my breath right along with her.

Bravian stole my heart right from the first because he’s not perfect, but he’s a hero, through and through.

If you are looking for pure entertainment, this is the story is a must read. Ms. Dionne has done a brilliant job of weaving unexpected twists and turns into the plot which will keep you riveted until the very last page.

Fortunately, it’s part of a series, and I’m thrilled that there are more stories to read.

Hey all you fantabulous writers out there, feel like trying your hand at a bit of Irish hotness? This call came through one of my publishers, so I thought I'd pass it along.

Lyrical Press is actively seeking submissions for our 2nd annual set of Irish-themed novels/novellas, to release March 2012. We want romantic, sexy stories either set in Ireland or including an Irish hero/heroine. Any subgenre of romance/erotica is welcome (we’d love to see what someone can do with an Irishman in a steampunk).

Pondering Weight Loss

Since February has rolled into town in a flurry of snowfall, I’ve heard from some friends who are working very hard at keeping up with their New Year’s resolutions to get in shape.

The four I checked in with today have each managed to lose weight since starting their programs. It’s a wonderful thing. Ladies, I’m so very proud of you.

But. You knew that was coming didn’t you. Down to the very last woman, they each said, “Oh, I’ve lost ____ pounds, but it’s only water weight.” Way to diss yourselves, girls.

Physically it may be true, and I'm not a health professional so I don't know for a fact. It just seems as if we are willing to blow off our hard work and success like it’s nothing. Like we don’t deserve it. Yeah, we lost weight, but we’re sure the scale was broken.

You’ve been to the doctor’s office or the hospital and stepped up on that scale. Even though sometimes you’d really like to just skip it. Especially if your appointment is after lunch. When you step off, have they ever said, ‘Oh, 140 (or whatever number), but we have to subtract ten pounds for water weight.’? I bet not.

Congratulate yourselves. You know who you are, and you rock!

Note: The author of this blog solved this issue for the moment by simply hiding the scale. In fact, since the topic of weight loss gives her a headache, she’s wandered off in search of a lovely bottle of wine to serve with dinner. We’re hoping she’ll be back next week.

Irritation Nation – Male Body Spray

Strange topic for a Monday. It started with an incident at a restaurant on Friday night, and I’ve really tried to let it go. Really.

It harkens back to the recently celebrated milestone birthday. One of the gifts was a gift card to a fabulous eatery. Reservations were made, and before you know it, there we were sitting on our lovely banquette. Grinning at the pristine white table cloth, linen napkins in our laps, both of us working very hard to be ‘proper’ (not the uncivilized heathens we are most of the time) and trying to keep our elbows off the table so as not to offend the elegantly suited waiter.

I’d only started sipping my ice cold martini when a lovely family is seated next to us. Not close mind you, but at the next table. With a very handsome teenager in tow. It was clear he didn’t want to be there, but he does get props for working very hard to keep the ‘tude in check. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for his cologne. It wafted in with him, and proceeded to make itself at home with us. And there is no doubt it belonged to him because every time he passed us to go, to the loo, outside to smoke, to make a phone call, who knows this time, the smell became even stronger and then receded as he did.

Nothing like eating a fabulous designer meal, overlaid with the smell of don’t-you-think-I’m-sexy.

Now a guy who smells just right is a hot item, no doubt about it. But the smell should be enticing. It should make you want to step in closer and investigate. Thoroughly. It shouldn’t hit you in the face like a bat from ten feet away.

Dudes. Ease up on the vat of eau-de-clean after the shower, ‘kay? Soap, clean clothes, and just a hint of spray will do it. Having one son and two step-sons who’ve made it through their teen years has proven my research. None of them have trouble getting dates. I know of what I speak, young padawan.

I mean surely, you know that the chicks throwing themselves on the guy in the commercial were paid to do that right? If you’re not handing out the bucks, or a celebrity, they’re not waiting in line to jump you.

And if you’re still hanging on to the fantasy of whatever the girl of your dreams wants to do to you, (something brought on by the smell, no doubt), man, a girls got to be able to breathe to do most of them.

Guys, you can rock a girl’s world. I believe in you. Just stop trying to do it through her nose.

Excuse Me, Do I Know You?

Or maybe the title should be, How Well Do You Know Your Characters?

As it turns out, not nearly as well as I thought. I’ve had the plot for my current WIP for a long time. In fact, years. Unfortunately, this led me to make a major mistake in getting to know my characters. And I didn’t even realize what the issue was, until I read someone else’s book.

This book is not new, it’s a couple years old. It’s essentially, an ‘insider’s guide’ to a popular series that’s been out for several years. It contains deleted scenes from the books, author interviews with the characters, in reverse, the characters interview the author. A novella, profiles of the characters, and questions to the characters posed by readers. And this barely scratches the surface. And no, the title doesn’t matter for the purpose of this post.

As I read, the sales and marketing person inside me stood up and cheered. Brilliant, simply brilliant. Once I finished the book, I marveled at how well this woman knew her characters. It was like they were real people to her. They came to her house, she went to theirs. Now don’t get me wrong, my characters are real to me too. But not like this. I confess that we’ve never shared a glass of wine.

And this led me to realize my own mistake. I’d overlooked something critical in my story. Because I’d carried this story around so long, I didn’t take the time to really know my characters. I thought I did. I’d spent years with them. But familiarity led me to brush right by a really important detail.

The problem I’ve been having is that I just didn’t buy into my heroine. I had no faith in her abilities to handle the problems I wanted to throw at her. So I went back to all the ‘how to build your characters’ information that I’ve gathered over the years, re-read it, and then thought about it in the terms of actually knowing this woman as a person. Not a character, but a real, live, breathing, need to earn a salary to make a living person.

That’s when it hit me. I wouldn’t hire her. She was missing a major experience component for the job she applied for. She would have been a pushover. In fact, she was. There was no conflict in the woman. Julia Cameron didn’t want to hire her, she felt pressured to do so, at my behest. Well, damn. If I didn’t believe she could handle the job, how could my readers believe it?

I tried to justify keeping her. To myself, to Julia, and to the rest of the team. A total, no-go. I couldn’t believe this one tiny detail had stalled my story. But it did. So, unwillingly, and after several rounds of painful editing, I let her go. She’s gone.

Reluctantly, I started the interview process again. It wasn’t long before a suitable candidate appeared. I passed her on to Julia, and she agreed. This woman rocks. If the team gives her a hard time, she’ll hand them their ass on a platter. As for Damon, this guy is literally in for the ride of his life.

My point to all this aimless rambling is that hopefully you can learn from my newbie mistake. If your plot hits all the proper high and low spots, your pacing is tight, and your story still isn’t working, take another look at your characters. In fact, invite them to dinner. You might be surprised at what you find out after a couple of glasses of wine.

Thus far, nothing is cooperating, not even the weather. Hopefully the invited out-of-town guests will be able to arrive safely.

It seems the only thing still functioning correctly is my sense of humor. Everytime something gets screwed up, all I can do is laugh. At this point, what else is there?

You know, I keep thinking things will get back to normal, and I'll be able to blog in a more predictable fashion. Thus far it hasn't happened. Omg, what if this is normal??

Winter Wondering

Working out in the snow, in places that aren't normally snow covered has led me to wonder about a few things.

1. Why is it, when the roads are dry, but there are snow flakes falling from the sky, do people drive twenty miles an hour under the speed limit?

2. Why is it, when the roads are not only covered in snow, but also a layer of ice, do some (not all) people in SUV's believe they can stop on a dime?

3. And last, but by no means least, why do people wait until they are right in the middle of an icy bridge to hit their brakes?

It's ugly out there folks, travel safe.

Books Are For Reading

While I totally understand the concept, it's very sad for those people who are missing out on something the rest of us thoroughly enjoy. Something we are incredibly passionate about. Books.

One would hope that these people actually do read, and have real books stashed somewhere. On their ereader or iPad perhaps? Imagine missing out on the comfort you get from stacks and stacks of books you've read and enjoyed.

How many hours have we spent, transported to another world, another life, by someone's words. Haven't you felt the thrill of sharing one of your favorite books with a friend. Or recommending one to someone because it gave you hours of pleaure? Words have power all their own.

Friends, Followers, and Other Stalkers

Enjoying my first cup of coffee this morning, I perused the recent posts of blogs I follow. As I read one of my pal’s posts about ‘unfollowing’ someone, I thanked goodness that I’d at least posted this week so she wouldn’t be using that term for me. At least not yet. But it did make me wonder, why do we follow people?

Continuing the morning ritual, I checked my facebook page for requests, and discovered I received two from people I didn’t know, and one from an old high school friend, which brightened the day. While there, I sent two friend requests and ‘liked’ an author whose book I recently finished and enjoyed. At the same time became irritated because there is someone on my list who posts every single day about her book being for sale. Grrr. If I buy it, will she go away and leave me alone??? But couldn’t bring myself to unfriend her, just yet. After all, she’s doing more marketing than I am at the moment, and I do applaud her for it, so for now we’re even.

I love to follow my friends and fellow authors because I feel it keeps me connected and I have a way of knowing what’s going on in their lives. I follow or friend them everywhere I can. I do it to authors whose work I enjoy as a way of supporting them. So here’s the truth of the matter. It makes me feel good. If you knew me, you’d know anything that makes people ‘feeeeeel’ good makes my eye twitch.

But strangely enough it does. It’s become more than marketing, as I find myself invested in things that are going on in others people’s lives, some of whom I don’t even know except by their avatar. When I read they’ve signed a new contract or something else good, it brightens my day.

So, I’m curious. Why do you follow, friend and tweet? And over time, has the way you feel about it changed?

New Beginnings

After all the holiday hoopla, don’t you love the moment you walk into the living room, or where ever, and everything is clean and neat? No greenery, ornaments, tinsel, etc. Just furniture and what usually passes for normal. When you’ve just vacuumed, dusted, and before the mail starts piling up. Nothing but unimpeded space. A place of possibilities, where anything can happen.

Um, that’s not quite true of the Fox household yet, but by the end of the week, maybe. lol.

I love this part of the New Year. Not really a resolutions girl, simply because I like to break rules and the temptation is just too much. But I do get that clean slate feeling. Even though there are things on my plate needing finishing from last year, at this point, I feel renewed. Invigorated. Like this is the year I’ll make it happen. When I figure out exactly what ‘it’ is, I’ll let you know.

Until then, here’s wishing each of you, a year of boundless possibilities, love that will make your heart overflow, and dreams that do come true.

Giving Thanks

Here in the U.S., today is Thanksgiving.

There are many things I'm thankful for. So many in fact, this blog doesn't have space for all of them. I'll try to list some that are at the top of my list.

1. My man. He's the best.
2. My son. He's amazing.
3. My friends. They add layers of love and laughter to my life.
4. Being published. It's a long held dream come true.
5. My writer friends. They understand like no one else can.

Top five is good, eh? Don't want you snoozing before turkey. Speaking of turkeys, our friends from Denver are arriving later today to spend the holiday weekend with us. And I'm cooking. Yipes!!

At the end of the day, I'll be thankful if the food is edible and the house doesn't burn down.

A month or so ago, I mentioned placing first runner-up in a writing contest for Gypsy Shadow Publishing. The prize was to have your work published by them. Yay!

This story is a little bit different from what I usually write, but just in time for the holidays. I’ve always been a fan of Dickens A Christmas Carol, and Scrooged is always up for regular review. My favorite part is the ghosts. Don’t you wonder who they are? How they came to be? I did.

Stretching The Rules - If You Live In America

Ask anybody who really knows me, one of my biggest pet peeves is when people use whatever public platform they may have to push their personal views on you. Yep, that’s a big ‘ol button pusher for me.

You know, when you’ve paid good money to go to a concert, then you have to listen to a fifteen minute diatribe on why the artist believes one person is right for us, and another is not. I thoroughly agree that you are entitled to have an opinion, and to voice it. The tiny detail is that I paid to hear a concert. If I was going to pay to hear your political views, you should have told me. Now if I met or listened to you at a political rally or fundraiser, how awesome would that be? Totally, in my book.

Today, I’m not breaking my rule, because I’m not going to tell you my political views or make any suggestions. I’m just stretching it, to encourage you, whatever political party you belong to, please, go and vote. It’s your right as an American. And whether you approve or not, a lot of good people died to ensure you’d have that right. If you don’t use it, eventually you’ll lose it. The bottom line is, we’re all Americans. It’s a cop-out to say your vote doesn’t matter. Get off your lazy butt and get to the polls.

Please, vote.

And just so you know, if we are having a personal conversation about the results, and I find out you didn’t vote, that will be the end of the conversation. If you don’t participate, I don’t want to hear you bitch.

Milestone

Today is a milestone for this blog. I've reached my 100th post. How awesome is that? In my book it's pretty cool, because when I started this blog, I really couldn't think of anything to say. Some days I still have that problem. I mean really, how interesting is my life? Perhaps I need to change my viewpoint. Maybe it's the minutia of everyday life which holds us all together.

Either way, thanks for being here, and following along. It matters.

Contest judging is officially finished for this year. It turned out to be a much different experience than expected. Don’t they always?

Let’s compare excuses and see if yours are the same as mine, and maybe dispel a few myths along the way.

I never volunteered to judge a contest because...

Myth Number 1
Free time is in short supply. I mean really, how could I possibly judge a contest when I have so many other ‘important’ things to do? Sometimes, this one is true. You just can’t work it in, and do a good job on the entries. I did a little switch up, which worked for me. When we’re not writing, we’re reading, right? I used my free reading time to read contest entries. And it was great. I discovered some really outstanding authors whom I really hope get published. Their stories shined so brightly, I want to know The End!

Myth Number 2
I don’t know enough. Maybe there are some who’d agree with this. lol. But seriously, I’ve learned a great deal over the past several years. From my publishers, editors, and mostly from my CP’s who are editors, authors, and professionals in their own right. Brilliant women, I consider myself lucky to know. I realize I still have so much to learn about this business, but at the same time, I’ve learned enough, that I can start giving back to the writing community which has been so generous to me.

Myth Number 3
Contests don’t matter. Getting published does. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this one. But, I admit to a change of heart after reading the entries. There are many different routes to publication. Who am I to say not to follow the one that works best for you? If you can draw the attention of an editor or agent with your entry, good for you! If you don’t, but you still learned something from entering, it’s still money well spent. If even that doesn’t work, try another route.

All in all, it proved to be a really good experience. I’m glad I did it. There wasn’t anything that got on my nerves about any of the entries. While not all spectacular, the work that each entrant put into their work was very evident. Judging will have a place on the calendar for next year. Can’t wait to see what’s new.

Irritation Nation – Bad Book Reviews

Sorry to come out swinging after an absence, but I read something today that just really hit me wrong. It was a review of a fellow authors work, and it wasn’t worth the pixels on the screen I was reading.

Let’s face it. If you’re a published author, you never want to receive a bad review. We spend hours and hours slaving over our work to make it the best it can possibly be. Reading each sentence multiple times to be as certain as possible we’ve used the correct word to describe the proper emotion, or setting, right down to the last detail. And that’s before the rounds of edits done by the publisher.

As adults, when we find out someone doesn’t like our work, mostly we manage to shrug it off and move on. It’s a big wide internet out here, and we understand that not everyone will love our work. Some people will just flat out not like it. And that’s okay.

I love Coke, and really don’t care for Pepsi. There you go. I doubt either company will lose one minute of sleep over my opinion.

But. I digress. And admit to confusion. Writers are supposed to be professionals, no? Following this happy trail, one would think a book review blog should be professional also. ...that screeching sound is the rubber meeting the road, as it were. Don’t get me wrong, there are several fantastic review sites which are run in a very professional manner, and it’s not these I’m referring to.

Thank you to the glorious internet, which helps all of us promote our books, it seems anyone who can type, can now also start a blog, review, and offer their opinion. Which is fine. I do it. You are absolutely entitled to do it also. But if you can’t even find the spell checker, I am absolutely entitled to not take one damn word seriously.

Finally, after all these years, I’ve volunteered to judge a writing contest or two. Waiting to receive the entries is a little like waiting for Christmas morning. Sometimes you’re not quite sure what you’re going to get, but will be interested none the less.

I’ve had some good experiences in contests and some bad ones. The bad ones left me not wanting to enter anything. Ever. After giving it much consideration, I thought one way to remove the blight of the not so good experience would be to pay it forward, and try to be a better judge myself. So I particularly looked for a contest in which the judge would be allowed to make comments on the entries.

In my bad experience some of the comments I received were, ‘this isn’t a romance’ and ‘no one uses language like that’. Uh, excuse me, it is, and they do. But the point is, to me, those were not constructive comments. Especially in light of the fact that one of the judges proceeded to comment about the thousands of romances she had read, and not found one like mine. Therefore, it wasn’t fit to be published. Thank goodness I received a contract for that story the same day. Otherwise I would have been crushed. And just for the record, it’s a bestseller.

Now I usually put on my big girl panties in the morning, so things like this shouldn’t get to me. If you want to think my writing is crap, you are totally allowed to think that. I promise, I won’t lose one minute of sleep over it. The big ‘but’ is, tell me why. If my characters are TSTL, tell me what I could improve, just don’t tell me they are. How does that help me make them better characters? As a contest judge, a response like that is not only condescending, it’s in poor taste, and totally unprofessional. And if you cannot tell me how I need to improve, even though you don’t like something, then you are not fit to be a contest judge.

*looks around* Crimeny, where did that soapbox come from? *climbs down*

So here’s hoping I can truly help someone, and inspire them to be a better writer. Or, congratulate them because they are totally awesome right out of the box.

I’m very excited to announce that my short story entitled Christmas Holly, placed first runner-up in a writing prompt contest offered by Gypsy Shadow Publishing. Which means at some point, it will be published. There’s nothing like the thrill of being offered a contract. That just doesn’t get old.

Here's a big shout out to a terrific author, Aubrie Dionne. Thanks, woman!! If she hadn’t posted the notice on her blog, I’d never have known about the contest. And doesn't she have the most beautiful website? It's lovely.

Don’t know if I’ve mentioned it once, or a million times, but I love to read paranormal novels. Christmas Holly is my first attempt at actually writing one. It feels great to know that it turned out okay. I’m very excited to be able to share it with you. Once the details get worked out, they’ll be passed along so you’ll know what’s happening.

Nah, not my next book. Me. From the hospital. Guess I was bored yesterday and decided a trip to the emergency room would be just the thing to liven my life up a bit.

Just wanted to touch base and let you know things are fine. They must be since they sent me home, either that or they thought a better route would be to just let me keel over at my desk in front of the computer screen.

I’ve been made to rest though and give some charming pills, so I’m off to take a nap. My caretaker is struggling to reach the plug and disconnect me even as I write this.

So, I’ll be back around with the rest of the analytics information next week. Very sorry to put you off.

Writer Biz #15 – Analytics, Part One

What are analytics? In this instance analytics, or stats (statistics), are tools used to analyze web related traffic. Whether it’s to your website, blog, or other web arena, you should be aware of who is visiting your site, how they’re getting there, and what they’re looking for once they arrive.

Having this information will help you to direct your time and promotional efforts to the proper areas, thus helping to insure your marketing plan will be a success.

Another piece of good news is that although you can buy an expensive software package, in the beginning, you don’t have to. There are quite a few good programs available for free.

Before you even start looking at the data, have your desired objective in mind. What are the goals of your marketing plan? Once you see all the reports, in all the various formats, it is incredibly easy to get overwhelmed and just dump the whole process, feeling like you don’t have a clue.

Just hold up a minute before you make that rash decision. You are, or want to be a professional writer, correct? Part of that responsibility is to understand your business and know how to grow your business. This data will help you do that.

In the beginning, with your goals firmly in mind, you’ll want to mainly focus on the reports which will help you analyze the whosits and whasits that are centered around your desired outcome. In other words, what factors are producing the outcome you want? For now, just ignore the rest. It will only add to the confusion.

In the beginning, you may only look at a of couple reports. And that’s okay. Get familiar with them, that way you can look at a glance and see what’s going on, and if it’s going in the direction you want things to go.

There are a few reports which are more important than others, and tomorrow, we’ll talk a look at those.

The fact that this story started out as a creative writing project is what initially piqued my interest. I had to read it, simply because I wanted to know what would keep a person working on a project, not for months, but for years. Why would the storyline hang around and not be replaced by another?

Because the story needs to be told. I read this story several months ago, and I can still recall it, very clearly. I bent my own rule to tell you about it, since the pub date is January 2009. But I’m fairly certain it was being edited in 2008 so we’ll go with that.

The characters are fully fleshed out, real people, dealing with painful issues. You don’t just walk away from people you care about when they have problems, and Sami is a strong protagonist who does her best to work through the challenges brought on by Steve and their marriage. Who could expect the coming turn of events?

A little romance, a few paranormal elements, a bit of horror to spice things up, and plenty of thrills keep things moving along at a breakneck pace. Ms. Richardson does a masterful job of weaving all the elements together to create a powerful story. Before I knew it, I was captivated by the characters, by the house, the history and everything it stood for. The plot drew me in, and kept me turning pages, long after dark.

If you want to read a story that will make you shiver, even though it’s ninety degrees outside, this is it. For all of you Stephen King fans out there, I highly recommend this story.

Programming Pre-empted

Writer Biz #14 – The Review, Part Three

Now that you have your goals set, and a timeline to reach them, let’s get to an action plan. Who is going to help you reach the desired outcome?

That would be your target market. Preferably more than one. For the sake of short blogs, let’s keep it simple. One market would be your current readers, another perhaps perspective readers. Think about who else in the publishing world has the ability to influence the sales of your book. I’m sure you can come up with a few more. Remember, the better you define your markets, the more effective your plan will be.

Once you’ve decided on your target market, it’s time to let them know about your great new story. Preferably about three months before the release date. The way you let them know, is by promotion. How you choose to promote is up to you. You’re savvy. If you’re reading this, you are probably already aware of several ways to reach your markets. Pick the ones that work best for you.

And remember, selling isn’t about telling people how great your book is, it’s about building relationships.

Last but definitely not least, is ROI. Return on investment. Once you’ve spent some time working your plan, you need to decide if it’s working for you. And don’t wait until you’ve reached then end of your timeline to check ROI. You need to check regularly. That way you’ll know if things are moving toward the goals you’ve set. Are you getting a good return for the time and money you’ve spent, or not? If not, you need to make adjustments to your plan.

One way to help gauge ROI is analytics. We’ll talk about those next week. They really aren’t as bad as they seem. And don’t worry, there won’t be a test.

Writer Biz #13 – The Review, Part Two

This portion of the review covers The Marketing Plan. There are about as many marketing plans as there are people. This is the big reason there’s not ‘one plan’ that works for everyone. Every one is different. What I want to focus on, is what they have in common.

Things you’ll need to create your own plan. Those are - goals, an action plan for reaching those goals, a timeline to do it in, and a way to evaluate your results. Everything else is pretty much open to interpretation.

The first thing you want to decide on is your goal. To sell books, gain notoriety, make money, become Nora, or whatever. The more directed your goal is the better.

The next thing you need to do is add a timeline. When do you want to accomplish said goals? Three months, six months, a year? Setting a date will help in a couple ways. One, it will help you clarify your objective. Two, it will help you assess your results. And three, it will help with the motivational aspect.

Once you’ve set your goal and timeline, give yourself a reality check. The more realistic and honest you are about your personality quirks, lifestyle, and other commitments, the more you are likely to put yourself in a position to meet the goals you set.

This is the basic framework for your plan, and it’s not carved in stone. Things change, and as you follow this process, you will change and grow. You may find down the road, you’ll need to adjust your goals, your timeline or other aspects of your plan. Do it. It’s your plan, after all.

This will be a quick overview. If you wish to read the detailed posts, please feel free to check the archives under Writer Biz. They’re all there.

The first item we discussed was record keeping. By now all of you should have some type of system in place for tracking Income, Expenses, and Writing Time.

This will help you take your writing seriously and give it the proper place in your to-do-list hierarchy.

Income. Income is money you make from writing. Whether it’s paid in the form of an advance or royalty, it’s still income. Thus taxable. While you’re enjoying your new found riches, keep an eye on your royalty statements. Mistakes happen. People are human. It’s your responsibility to address them, and deal with your publisher in a professional manner.

Expenses. An expense is money that you spend on things to run your business. And you have to be realistic about what your expenses are. The most common are office supplies, advertising. There are also writing classes, and conferences with editors and agents. There are others, but again, you’ll need to consult a tax professional in your area to be sure of is deductible and what isn’t, or check out the IRS website for more information.

Writing Time. If you want to write for a living, you need to know how much time you spend at it. No matter the job, most people know what hours they work, and when they don’t. Why wouldn’t you? The four big reasons to keep track of your writing are – Professionals do it, Production, Taxes, and Motivation.

Manic Monday

Pretty sure you've all had one. If it's today, my heart goes out to you.

Lots of away from the keyboard things going on today, just wanted to let you know what's in store the rest of the week.

Starting tomorrow, we'll get the Writer Biz segment up and running. I'll spend a day or two on a quick review, and bring us up to speed on the marketing plan, and we'll take it from there.

At the end of the week there'll be a new segment starting up, called Not New Review or What's on the Back List. Tell me which title you like, and we'll use that one.

The rule is, it has to be at least two years old, or older. No current releases allowed.

Have you ever read a brand new release, loved the author and then went hunting for the books on their back list? I've done that with several authors, and just want to pass along some stories I've enjoyed very much, in hopes that you'll enjoy them too.

Dirty Laundry

I grabbed a load of laundry out of the dryer, turned around to put it on the laundry table, then seeing something dark out of the corner of my eye, thought I'd left something in there.

Nope. He got in there, and out, all by himself. Fortunately, his sister came and stalled him long enough for me to take a picture.

Don't you just love animals? They make you laugh in spite of yourself.

Change Is Afoot

There are many changes happening in the publishing industry. Ebooks, the economy, and new technology seem to be the driving forces behind most of the current changes. Everywhere you look, there are quotes, articles, and opinions about all the goings on.

Isn’t it exciting? I know for some of you, it’s scary. Change is never easy. And for some, it will be more of a challenge than others. Like when your print publisher announces a complete change of business model and decides to go totally ebook. This has got to rock your world, simply because it probably seemed to come out of the blue.

Or how about this one. That B&N is for sale. Who saw that one coming? Things are happening at a rapid rate in the publishing world for sure. And the truth is, change doesn’t always have to be a bad thing. You can make it work for you. If you’re willing to consider, and embrace new ideas.

Imagine. Living in an era when big publishing’s business model will be changed forever. Powerful stuff. Overflowing with opportunity, despite all the negative press.

When it comes to change, especially major changes in the marketplace, this is the way I see it. There are three kinds of people.

-Those who wait for things to happen.

-Those who make things happen.

-And those who sit back and wonder what the hell happened.

Which one do you want to be?

Rules, Rules and More Rules

This came through the other day, and it’s still hanging about in the back of my consciousness, so apparently I’m meant to tell you about it.

It’s very easy to get bogged down in negative self-talk, rejections, not enough time to write, and all those other things associated with trying to work at building a writing career into the rest of our already bursting-at-the-seems life.

When I read this article from Writers Digest entitled,

The 10 Commandments of Fiction Writing,

it was like a going back to basics moment for me. Aha! My perspective snapped back in place. It was just enough of a tug back to reality to remind me that I write because I love it. And all the negative things don’t really matter because they are all part of the process. And I will not, live my life without it.

Personality Conflict

Have you ever written a character you didn’t like? And I’m not talking villain here.

It’s all about the heroine, or the hero. In this case, both. I make no claims to know all there is to know about the craft of writing. Yes, I’m published, but that in no way means I’ve nothing left to learn. As taught to me by my current WIP (work in progress, for those of you having a wtf? moment).

They each have a job to do in your story, correct? What do you do if you don’t believe they can handle the task the story has set for them?

It took me awhile to come to grips with this. At first I balked and thought, nah, I created them. Of course they’re going to work it out. I justified their existence by telling myself I didn’t know them well enough. And kept writing. And I still wasn’t buying it.

The hero seemed weak, more of a nineties kind of guy, when what I wanted was more like knight-in-shining-armor wrapped in Pierce Brosnan.

The heroine couldn’t convince me she was a strong female role model, no matter how she tried. Simply going with the flow does not a role model make.

What to do, what to do. Um, uh, mmmmm. *light bulb* Rewrite! Yes. That will work.

It didn’t. And the third time it didn’t work either.

I looked at all the other story elements. Plot, subplot, supporting characters, setting, dialogue, back story, etc. Nada, zip, zero. It all seemed to work together, I could see where the story would go, knew the beginning, middle, and end. The problem still remained. I didn’t believe in my main characters. Nothing they did could suspend my disbelief.

I have to ask myself, did I run out of talent? Or is there an elephant in the room and I’m just not seeing it?

The choices are - ditch these two losers, or recreate them with the strength they need to carry on.

Renegade Renovation #12 – We’re In!

The trim was all painted, and hung on the drywall with care.
In hopes that the inspector would soon be there...

And here’s the rest of the story. At the end of June, somewhere around the last blog post here, we made one final push to get everything ready for the final inspection. The inspector came, and said things looked great, we could move in. Yay! Sort of.

Yes, it was a milestone. One we’d been working to reach for more than a year. There was one tiny thing we didn’t realize though. The work wasn’t over yet.

The trim still had to be filled, caulked and touch-up painted. There were closet organizers to install.

And then the biggie. Moving our belongings from storage, into the house. Whoo-hoo!!

The answer to your question is, yes. I’m writing this post from my shiny new office. It’s not quite together yet. After all, you need a place to put all the junk, right? But it’s so cool. After what feels like months of depravation, here I sit surrounded by box after box, stacked three high. Of books! Ain’t life grand.

Back On Track - Or Is That Off Track?

Any hoo, I'm back in the land of technology. Taking time off was a must do, in order to get things done as fast as humanly possible. I'll clue you in on those 'things' very soon.

The only coherent post I could have made over the last several weeks would have been, "Oh, I'm so tired." Brings to mind Madelaine Kahn in Blazing Saddles...which makes me laugh out loud.

Starting Monday, we'll be back to the regularly scheduled program around here. Whatever the heck that is. I'm looking forward to it. I hope you are.
