Life with Lucy #11

Happy Saturday! Lucy is back this week with a new accomplishment. I’m so proud of her.

Hi, everyone. It’s me, Lucy. I’m so excited. My world opened up in a big way this week. There’s this place outside Mom calls a deck. I’ve never been on a deck before. It felt funny on my feet. When Mom first brought me outside on it, I was afraid to leave the door. I barely sat down I was so scared. I shivered. I didn’t want to go out there.

Since the weather has warmed up, Mom and Dad go outside to use this thing they call a grill. It smells like meat. Yum! I don’t want to stay in the house by myself, so I had to go outside with them. The grill smelled so good, I did take a few steps toward it. Then I backed up because I wasn’t sure about the deck.

Every day Mom takes me out there. Some days, well, okay, most days, she bribes me with treats. Don’t look at me like that. Who in their right mind turns down a cookie?

The other day a bird landed on the edge. I was so curious about the bird, I forgot about the deck. I ran over to sniff it, and it flew away! Then I was stuck. I was far away from Mom and the only way to get to her was to walk. I was very careful. Slow steps. Tiny steps. And you know what? I got there. Close to mom. She gave me a cookie.

Every day I practiced walking on the deck. Every day it got better. Now it’s a wonderful place.

Did I tell you I don’t have much hair? The sun feels so good. I think I’m a summer dog. I like to just laze about in the sun. The deck is a great place to do that. And the smells! Its high enough, the breeze brings everything my way. And I can watch everything in the yard from up here. You should try it. It's nice!

It’s been fascinating to watch Lucy work through her fear.

She reminds me not to be afraid of what I want to accomplish, especially with my writing. And that it all starts with baby steps. But we have to take those steps to get where we want to go. Even if they are scary sometimes. No one can do it for us. We have to want it bad enough to take the risk.

Every day is truly an adventure. Sometimes they don’t come with fanfare, they arrive in silence, bit by bit, and then one day, there you are. Where you always hoped to be.

AUTHOR BIO:

Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, nine ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories!

Now I'm in the mood for boots and hats. I'll have to give these a try. Thank you for spending the day with us, D'Ann. We wish you much success with your books!

Life with Lucy #10 - Not

We've interrupted our regularly scheduled programming today, because the star has the day off. Go figure. They get a little famous and then, bam. They're on vacation. Lucy sends her love, and says she'll be back next week with a happy tale.

She had a great week, and right now she's sleeping soundly on the bed. So rather than disturb her slumber, I thought I'd give you a peek at some more book covers.

I've expanded Christmas Knight into a novella, because the story simply cried out for it. So did readers.

I struggled with doing the same to Christmas Holly, and ultimately decided to leave it be. Part of its charm is that it's short.

Lest you think I've given  up, like everyone, life doesn't happen the way you expect it to, so I took a detour from my writing because it was necessary.

Things are back on track for me, I'll be publishing my own work and seeking out publishers for some longer works. I think they're calling us hybrid authors these days. Just hang on, and next week they'll be calling us something else. It's an exciting time to be an author.

I've got lots of new work scheduled for release later this year. Unfortunately, even taking the reins, I can't get things finished as fast as I'd like to. But it's happening. So stay tuned! These quickies and a new novel or two will be available for your reading pleasure very soon!

Thank you for sticking with me. Have a lovely weekend.

Sun Storm and Ten Quickies with Karen Duvall

BUY: B&N | AMAZON
Today our featured guest is author, Karen Duvall. Karen has been kind enough to answer our ten quickies, so we can get to know her just a little better. We've also been gifted with an excerpt from her latest release, Sun Storm. It's one of three novellas in Harlequin Luna's Til the World Ends anthology. So let's get crackin'!

1. Mountains or Beaches? Definitely beaches. I was born in Hollywood, California, and grew up in Hawaii, so the ocean feels like my natural habitat.

2. Early Morning or Late Night? Used to be early morning, but over the past few years I've become a night owl. I don't sleep much, maybe 5 or 6 hours a night, so if I'm in bed by one I'll be up at the crack of dawn anyway.

3. High Heels or Sneakers? My feet are embarrassingly big. I can't wear heels; they pinch my toes and give me blisters. It's sneakers all the way.

4. Summer or Winter? Definitely winter. Even though I grew up in warm climates, I really like cold weather. Love snow and rain, snuggling up to the fire with a blanket and a book. Heaven.

5. Wine or Chocolate? Wine. I like chocolate okay, but a good glass of wine is my weakness.

6. Pen or Laptop? Laptop. I can hardly read my handwriting sometimes, and to be honest, writing long hand makes my hand cramp up after a while. My fingers fly over a keyboard.

7. Sports Car or Motorcycle? Sports Car. I drove a motorcycle into a ditch once. I never could coordinate my hands and feet with the gears, gas and breaks. For me, driving a motorcycle is like trying to walk backwards.

8. Gold or Silver? Silver. It goes with anything.

9. Appetizer or Dessert? Appetizer. I'm more of savory person than one who goes for sweets. I love dessert, but I'd much rather have a yummy crudité.

10. Kindle or Paperback? Kindle. I adore my Kindle because I can enlarge the type. That tiny type in paper books gives me a headache and makes my eyes burn. I can read for a long time on my Kindle without my eyes getting tired.

The Blurb:
Sarah Daggot has been chasing storms since she was a child. But after the biggest solar flares in history nearly destroy the planet, she becomes a Kinetic, endowed by her exposure to extreme radiation with the power to sense coming storms-in the cosmos and beyond. And she’s not the only one. Sarah believes the Kinetics are destined to join forces and halt the final onslaught of the sun. She’ll vow to keep trying to convince the one missing link in their chain of defense, the enigmatic Ian Matthews, up until the world ends.

The Excerpt from Sun Storm:

"Going somewhere?" Ian eyed the vehicle.

"As a matter of fact, I am. Another storm is coming, to downtown Denver this time, and I'm kind of in a hurry to get there before it hits."

He scowled, his delicious brown eyes getting lost in his squint. "That's dangerous."

"Not for me. But it could be for the people in Denver if I don't arrive in time to warn them." I flipped up the Storm Trooper's hood and angled my jack under the battery to lift it from the ground. The higher I could get it, the less distance I'd have to carry it.

"Let me do that." He crouched down, scooped up the battery with a grunt, and carried it the rest of the way to the vehicle. I was about to explain where it needed to go, but there was no need. He plunked it precisely in place and began hooking up the cables.

"How did you know—?"

"Your dad and I have something in common." He hunkered over the engine, checking lines and pistons and electrical cords. Ian knew his way around a solar-powered car. "I was a mechanic in Boston. That's where I'm from."

He seemed too good to be true, which spiked my suspicion meter. I seriously liked this guy, so why did I resist trusting him?

"All set," he said, as he wiped his hands on his scrub pants. "Ready to go?"

I frowned. "Are you inviting yourself to come with me?"

"Don't mind if I do." He smiled and I had to admit his charm was disarming. There was real heart in that smile. His eyes had a genuine twinkle, but they also hinted at what remained unspoken. I sensed his discomfort, which made me uncomfortable, too. About him.

I couldn't think of a better way to find out more about him than to take him along, but only on one condition. "Before you hop in, I need you to answer a question for me."

His smile faded to a barely discernible grin. "Sure. What do you want to know?"

"What kind of Kinetic are you?"

His grin broadened to the snarly one I liked so much. "I'm the weatherman."

Ian controlled weather. I chased weather. The combination was uncanny. I thought about the good he could do for farmers and their dying crops. Hardly anyone grew fruits and vegetables anymore, unless it was in a controlled terrarium or greenhouse. The yields were rare and precious, and only available to the wealthy.

Now that we were both buckled into our seats and on our way out of town, I decided to ask more about what he could do. "If you can make it rain, you have the power to change the world."

Life with Lucy #9

Happy Friday, Everyone. Lucy’s back this week with a tale of woe…be sure to give her a hug at the end would you?

Hi, it’s me, Lucy. I’ve had a tough week. Really it was the weekend that got me. My pack left me to
go to Atlanta for a wedding. I had to spend two nights by myself at the kennel!! I love the kennel lady. She is so nice to me. But I have to sleep by myself and be all alone without my pack and I don’t like it. At all! I scratched and scratched at the door, and barked. No one would take me home. When I went out for my walk, I didn’t want to go back in my kennel.

Then Mom and Dad came back and I was so happy! I jumped up and down, turned in circles and licked them like crazy.

Yesterday I got to go out in the rain and play in the mud. It’s fun to chase a ball in the mud. You should try it sometime. It’s slippery and gooey between your toes. Then you get to lick yourself dry. Yum.

It’s sunny today, so Mom says we’re going to the park for a walk. Won’t that be fun!

Lucy needed her rain coat this week
Lucy did have a tough weekend. Lest you think we’ve gotten the perfect dog, she does suffer from separation anxiety in a big way. It was heartbreaking to have to leave her, so we made the trip as short as possible. Fortunately our kennel keeper understands, so she spends as much time as possible with Lucy, and takes very good care of her.

We are addressing the problem, but it takes months to work it out. We’re starting by teaching her to stay, which she does beautifully most of the time. Now she’ll stay on her blanket while we’re out of sight for about twenty minutes. She knows we’re still in the house, but she’s stopped whining and scratching at the door if she doesn’t see us. She just sits and waits. So it is getting better. We just have to be consistent, and patient enough to let time do its work. And truly, she’s worth every minute. I couldn’t have asked for a better companion.

Forbidden Angel by Megan D. Martin

Hello there faithful followers. It's been a busy week here at Fox Tales. Today, we're honored to feature author Megan D. Martin and her latest release, Forbidden Angel. Stay tuned for my review and a chance to win an awesome prize. So let's get to it.

Blurb:
When captured by the Nazis, Sarah finds herself in a concentration camp that not only brings her closer to death...but closer to love.
Sarah Brenner, a young Jewish woman, is terrified when she finds herself in the heat of a railcar bound for a work camp in Nazi Germany. For years she, along with her mother and sister, had hidden from the SS, but no one could hide forever. Her hatred for those who have enslaved them is ever-growing, especially when they arrive and she encounters the shockingly handsome Nazi doctor who can’t seem to keep his eyes—or hands—off her.

Aurel Rothstein is not your everyday concentration camp physician. The endless prisoners and lack of care he's allowed to give have made him numb to the work he so coveted. It isn’t until he comes face to face with a beautiful prisoner that his heart becomes involved with his job—a forbidden and fatal move to any Nazi.

When a vile soldier takes direct interest in Sarah, she will be forced to make a choice that will change her life forever: ignore the pull toward the handsome doctor or give in to the forbidden passion he awakens with only a look. Either way they both risk everything...

My Review:
Honestly, I admit to being taken aback by the setting of this book. As a long time romance reader, I’ve not read anything set in a concentration camp. Not to say they don’t exist, just that perhaps I’ve steered clear of them due to the abject pain and horror of the subject matter.

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Ms. Martin did her research, and created characters that fit the setting perfectly. For a short novel, the pace is fast and the storyline is packed with action that will keep you wondering what will happen next.

Sarah finds herself, her mother and her sister incarcerated in a concentration camp at the end of WWII. She bravely fights for their safety, as well as her own. Although things don’t always go her way, her world really turns upside down when she meets Aurel. Who would have thought she’d find love under these conditions?

Aurel, the head physician for the camp, has realized what he has done over the last few years is horrid, but that doesn’t erase the horrors he’s committed. With Sarah he’s able to forget, however briefly, that he’s lost any chance he might have for happiness or a normal life after the war.

I wasn’t too sure there would be a believable HEA, but this author pulled it off brilliantly.

The only thing I would change about this book, would be to make it true novel length so we could explore the characters and setting with greater depth.

A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for my honest review.

Ten Quickies and Secrets of an Aztec Temple by Paty Jager

Today we are fortunate to have award-winning author Paty Jager as our guest. We're celebrating her latest release, Secrets of an Aztec Temple. Paty has been kind enough to play along and answer our Ten Quickies questions. Before we get started, I must say I just love her bio photo! Don't you? Be sure to read on for a peek at her at her new book. Take it away, Paty!

1. Mountains or Beaches?  That one is tough! I grew up in the mountains and do love pine trees and snowy peaks but I love going to the Oregon Coast and watching the waves crash against the rocks. I guess I’d say beaches.

2. Early Morning or Late Night? Early Morning. I love watching the sun come up, hear the birds and animals starting their day, and having yet another day to be the people I love and do the things I love to do.

3. High Heels or Sneakers? Sneakers! Well, boots, actually. It’s hard to walk through a corral or field in high heels. ;)

4. Summer or Winter? Another hard one…I love summer for the warmth, the smell of fresh cut hay, riding my horse. But I love the beauty of winter. I guess summer trumps winter because I came up with more reasons I like it. ;)

5. Wine or Chocolate? Chocolate. No problem determining that one. I can’t start my day without a cup of hot chocolate and I keep Dove Dark chocolate in the house at all times.

6. Pen or Laptop? Laptop. As I get older and use the computer more, my writing has become so scribbly I can’t read it half the time.

7. Sports Car or Motorcycle? Sports Car! You won’t catch me hurtling down a paved road with nothing around me but leather!

8. Gold or Silver? It used to be gold but I like silver better now.

9. Appetizer or Dessert? Dessert! There are sooo many things you can do with chocolate syrup. ;)

10. Kindle or Paperback? Both! I love my Kindle but there are times, like in the bath tub and long trips when I can’t recharge the Kindle that a paperback is my go to source for reading.

For every 20 comments I will give-away a $5 egift certificate to Amazon.

Thank you for having me here today! I’d like to share with you the blurb and a short excerpt of my latest action adventure romance release, Secrets of an Aztec Temple.

Here's the blurb:
Revenge is not always sweet…

Isabella Mumphrey can’t leave a puzzle alone. This time she attempts to use her anthropology knowledge to uncover who is stealing priceless artifacts from an Aztec Temple in Mexico City. She believes the discovery will prove her worth to the World Intelligence Agency.

Tino Constantine is also in Mexico City. He has infiltrated a drug lord’s organization to find enough evidence to not only prove the man’s illegal activities, but to bring him down for numerous deaths. Namely those of Tino’s family.

But when the love of his life, Isabella, strolls into his enemy’s home, Tino is challenged with the choice of saving her or fulfilling his revenge.
Here's an excerpt:

Garza’s teeth curled back in a feral smile as he nodded his head. “I like your thinking, but I wish them alive. I need to set some rules the two pendejos need to learn.”

“Does Cezar know where they are?” Garza’s right hand man had been missing for the last hour. Tino suspected he was gathering information on the whereabouts of the brothers.

“Cezar is escorting a special guest here. But Hector has been following the two and called to tell me he lost them in the colonias.”

“I’ll start there.” Tino turned to leave.

“Rodriguez. If you cannot bring them in, do not show your face here again.”

The threatening tone punctuated what he already knew. If he didn’t bring the Alvarez brothers back he would be hunted down and killed because he’d witnessed and participated in illegal activities.

“I will be back with your guests.”

Tino exited the office congratulating himself at having made it to Garza’s inner sanctum, but now realized there were two more doors that would need breached before he could find the evidence to bring in the Drug Enforcement Agency.

His mind wandered to how to find the Alvarez brothers and make his way up in status to gain entry into the room behind the bullet-proof door. He stepped out onto the front portico. Cezar walked alongside a woman who carried herself in a familiar way.

Tino’s blood iced with fear as he recognized the long hair, button nose, and wire-rimmed glasses. Another glance at the woman he knew so well and the ice melted, simmered, and quickened his heart. What brought his querida to the drug lord’s Mexico City compound? Dread, desire, and regret collided as he blindly slammed into a cement pillar.

Ten Quickies with Sutton

Today we're adding something a little different here at Fox Tales. For guest authors, they can choose to just answer ten quickies, instead of writing a guest post. For those of you who do blog tours, it's our effort to ease the brain strain of constantly trying to think up something new. Plus it will still give all of our lovely readers a feel for the author.

It wouldn't be fair if I didn't answer them myself first. So here goes:

1. Mountains or Beaches? Mountains. Born and raised in Colorado. Need I say more?

2. Early Morning or Late Night? Truly? Neither. I’m a middle of the day kind of person.

3. High Heels or Sneakers? Anyone who follows me on Pinterest knows high heels are my own private fetish. Oops! Did I say that out loud?

4. Summer or Winter? Summer. The longer I live, the less I like the cold.

5. Wine or Chocolate? Wine. I’m really not much of a chocolate person, unless it’s made into a martini…

6. Pen or Laptop? Laptop. I could live without one, but it would be ugly.

7. Sports Car or Motorcycle? Sports Car. Or rather, super car. The Mercedes McLaren is my fav, even though they’re out of production.

8. Gold or Silver? Gold. Value aside, I like the color.

9. Appetizer or Dessert? Appetizer. More often than not, I prefer savory or salty, to sweet.

10. Kindle or Paperback? Kindle. Sometimes a paperback, but that’s happening less and less as time goes on.

There you have it. Leave a comment if there's something else you're dying to know about your favorite author. We can always update the list.
