Check out Moira Keith's new release, A Soul to Keep. If you enjoy a good paranormal/urban fantasy story, you should give this one a try.

Here's the blurb:

In the realm of the Fallen, there’s a little saint and sinner in us all…

One moment can impact the future.

Love never served Jayde Cross well and owing a debt to a demon is the proof. Reaping is a lonely existence and with her thirtieth birthday approaching, she's got enough to worry about without adding romance to the mix. It's why her friendship with the man living next door works so well. They both live lives filled with secrets and ignoring their self-imposed rules isn’t an option. Too bad her heart disagrees.

The past is about to come back and haunt one of Heaven’s Fallen.

Caleb Thorne always found living among mortals difficult, until he met the intriguing woman down the hall. She demands nothing of him and is completely safe. When an enemy from his past catches up with him, Caleb soon discovers the rules of the Fallen exist for a reason and loving a mortal may prove to be the bigger danger.

Sun Storm and Ten Quickies with Karen Duvall

BUY: B&N | AMAZON
Today our featured guest is author, Karen Duvall. Karen has been kind enough to answer our ten quickies, so we can get to know her just a little better. We've also been gifted with an excerpt from her latest release, Sun Storm. It's one of three novellas in Harlequin Luna's Til the World Ends anthology. So let's get crackin'!

1. Mountains or Beaches? Definitely beaches. I was born in Hollywood, California, and grew up in Hawaii, so the ocean feels like my natural habitat.

2. Early Morning or Late Night? Used to be early morning, but over the past few years I've become a night owl. I don't sleep much, maybe 5 or 6 hours a night, so if I'm in bed by one I'll be up at the crack of dawn anyway.

3. High Heels or Sneakers? My feet are embarrassingly big. I can't wear heels; they pinch my toes and give me blisters. It's sneakers all the way.

4. Summer or Winter? Definitely winter. Even though I grew up in warm climates, I really like cold weather. Love snow and rain, snuggling up to the fire with a blanket and a book. Heaven.

5. Wine or Chocolate? Wine. I like chocolate okay, but a good glass of wine is my weakness.

6. Pen or Laptop? Laptop. I can hardly read my handwriting sometimes, and to be honest, writing long hand makes my hand cramp up after a while. My fingers fly over a keyboard.

7. Sports Car or Motorcycle? Sports Car. I drove a motorcycle into a ditch once. I never could coordinate my hands and feet with the gears, gas and breaks. For me, driving a motorcycle is like trying to walk backwards.

8. Gold or Silver? Silver. It goes with anything.

9. Appetizer or Dessert? Appetizer. I'm more of savory person than one who goes for sweets. I love dessert, but I'd much rather have a yummy crudité.

10. Kindle or Paperback? Kindle. I adore my Kindle because I can enlarge the type. That tiny type in paper books gives me a headache and makes my eyes burn. I can read for a long time on my Kindle without my eyes getting tired.

The Blurb:
Sarah Daggot has been chasing storms since she was a child. But after the biggest solar flares in history nearly destroy the planet, she becomes a Kinetic, endowed by her exposure to extreme radiation with the power to sense coming storms-in the cosmos and beyond. And she’s not the only one. Sarah believes the Kinetics are destined to join forces and halt the final onslaught of the sun. She’ll vow to keep trying to convince the one missing link in their chain of defense, the enigmatic Ian Matthews, up until the world ends.

The Excerpt from Sun Storm:

"Going somewhere?" Ian eyed the vehicle.

"As a matter of fact, I am. Another storm is coming, to downtown Denver this time, and I'm kind of in a hurry to get there before it hits."

He scowled, his delicious brown eyes getting lost in his squint. "That's dangerous."

"Not for me. But it could be for the people in Denver if I don't arrive in time to warn them." I flipped up the Storm Trooper's hood and angled my jack under the battery to lift it from the ground. The higher I could get it, the less distance I'd have to carry it.

"Let me do that." He crouched down, scooped up the battery with a grunt, and carried it the rest of the way to the vehicle. I was about to explain where it needed to go, but there was no need. He plunked it precisely in place and began hooking up the cables.

"How did you know—?"

"Your dad and I have something in common." He hunkered over the engine, checking lines and pistons and electrical cords. Ian knew his way around a solar-powered car. "I was a mechanic in Boston. That's where I'm from."

He seemed too good to be true, which spiked my suspicion meter. I seriously liked this guy, so why did I resist trusting him?

"All set," he said, as he wiped his hands on his scrub pants. "Ready to go?"

I frowned. "Are you inviting yourself to come with me?"

"Don't mind if I do." He smiled and I had to admit his charm was disarming. There was real heart in that smile. His eyes had a genuine twinkle, but they also hinted at what remained unspoken. I sensed his discomfort, which made me uncomfortable, too. About him.

I couldn't think of a better way to find out more about him than to take him along, but only on one condition. "Before you hop in, I need you to answer a question for me."

His smile faded to a barely discernible grin. "Sure. What do you want to know?"

"What kind of Kinetic are you?"

His grin broadened to the snarly one I liked so much. "I'm the weatherman."

Ian controlled weather. I chased weather. The combination was uncanny. I thought about the good he could do for farmers and their dying crops. Hardly anyone grew fruits and vegetables anymore, unless it was in a controlled terrarium or greenhouse. The yields were rare and precious, and only available to the wealthy.

Now that we were both buckled into our seats and on our way out of town, I decided to ask more about what he could do. "If you can make it rain, you have the power to change the world."

Dark Genesis

Happy Friday, everyone. Today it's my pleasure to post an excerpt from Dark Genesis, by A.D. Koboah. It's a paranormal romance that sounds simply fascinating. I haven't read it yet, but am looking forward to doing so. Please read on for the details!

Blurb:

Life for a female slave is one of hardship and unspeakable sorrow, something Luna knows only too well. But not even she could have foreseen the terror that would befall her one sultry Mississippi evening in the summer of 1807.

On her way back from a visit to see the African woman, a witch who has the herbs Luna needs to rid her of her abusive master’s child, she attracts the attention of a deadly being that lusts for blood. Forcibly removed from everything she knows by this tormented otherworldly creature, she is sure she will be dead by sunrise.

Dark Genesis is a love story set against the savage world of slavery in which a young woman who has been dehumanised by its horrors finds the courage to love, and in doing so, reclaims her humanity.

Author Bio:

A.D. Koboah was born in London and completed an English Literature degree in 2000. Her first novel, Dark Genesis, was inspired by the concept of dehumanisation and the impact it can have on the psyche. She is currently working on a screenplay and will begin the sequel to Dark Genesis shortly.

Excerpt:

As I got nearer to the cabin, I saw that the door had been left open and a light was burning inside even though the sun had yet to go down. I approached gingerly. Already feeling the unease that always possessed me in the presence of the African woman, I walked up to the door, and stopped.

“Mama Akosua.”

There was a short spell of silence and then her voice floated out to me.

“I have been expecting you.” The voice was low and dry like the sound of rustling leaves.

She probably said that every time someone came to her door, no doubt to help foster the belief that she was a powerful all-seeing, all-knowing witch. But the words still sent icy fingers trailing down my spine and I swallowed before taking her words as permission to enter.

The cabin, which consisted of only one room, was rich with the slightly bitter, but not unpleasant, smell of dried herbs. Most of the room was taken up by a long wooden table, which held bottles, bowls and an assortment of other instruments that were used to prepare her concoctions. Every wall in the room was lined with shelves holding bottles, jars and baskets of fresh and dried herbs. The only evidence that someone lived in the cabin was the pallet in the corner. This was the most furniture I had seen in any slave cabin, but as her Master profited from the sale of her herbs, it was in his interest to make sure she had everything she needed. There was another smaller table in the centre of the room and that is where she sat, peering at me by the light of an oil lamp.

She was a small lithe woman with delicate features like mine. Her head was cleanly shaven and she would have been considered beautiful were it not for the scars, rows of lines about an inch long, marking her forehead and cheeks. It was rumoured that those scars had been self-inflicted when she was first brought to America as a slave. Some people whispered that she had done it to honour the customs of her people, others, that the journey, the horrors of the middle passage, had driven her to scar her face in madness and despair. Although I would never dare to ask her, I didn’t believe she had been driven insane. The shrewd dark eyes that met mine belonged to a strong, sharp mind and I doubted that anything could, or ever would, be able to break it.

“Evening, Mama Akosua,” I said as I walked into the circle of light.

There was still daylight outside but it didn’t seem to reach the small window in Mama Akosua’s cabin and so it was always dark in here no matter what the time of day.

She gestured to the chair opposite hers, her eyes never leaving my face. I moved to the chair and when I sat down, she pushed a small cup toward me.

“Drink,” she said.

I picked up the cup and sipped the cool concoction, which tasted vaguely of mint leaves. Whatever it was, it seemed to have an immediate effect because I no longer felt as hot and the fatigue, which had been pulling on me like lead weights, seemed to evaporate.

Feeling slightly better, I was able to meet the force of her gaze fully. She seemed to have aged a great deal since I last saw her, nearly four years ago. The lines around her eyes and the ones running from her nose to the corners of her mouth had deepened and although she was not yet forty years old, she looked much older.

She studied me for a few moments and a soft sigh escaped her when she finally shifted her gaze away from my face.

“It is as I feared,” she said and stood up, wincing from the small movement.

“You hurt?”

“It is a small price to pay,” she mumbled, more to herself it seemed.

She reached into a basket on one of the shelves and pulled out a small black cloth bundle. Moving back to the table she placed the bundle before her and when she sat down again she closed her eyes for a few seconds. She was clearly in a lot of pain.

“I have prepared what you need,” she said pulling open the cloth bundle to reveal six paper sachets of herbs.

There was no need for her to ask me why I was here. I would only risk making this dangerous journey for one reason.

“Take this tonight.” She pointed to the larger of the bundles. “The rest is to be taken for five nights after, to stop the bleeding.”

She tied up the bundle and pushed it across the table toward me.

“Thank you, Mama Akosua.”

“Is it the son this time?”

I looked up and met her intimidating gaze, but on this occasion, I couldn’t hold it. She knew how much these things shamed me yet it didn’t stop her from asking about them. When I answered, my voice was barely a whisper.

“Yes.”

 “How long?”

“He... he be at my cabin near about three times a week now since Easter.”

“He is worse than his father, no?” It wasn’t a question; it was a statement.

 “Yes.”

I fought back tears as an image came to me from a few weeks before. I was standing in my tiny cabin and Master John was behind me gazing at our reflections in a small handheld mirror. I don’t know if making me look at myself was one of the many ways he had of tormenting me or if he really was oblivious to the fact that I despised my face. Either way, he would make me stare at my piercing dark brown eyes framed by long sooty eyelashes, deep mahogany skin, small delicate features and large sensuous lips. My springy, unruly hair was pulled away from my face, something he insisted on, as my hair was the one thing a man like him could find no beauty in. It was always the same ordeal with the mirror whenever he came to my cabin. And I honestly don’t know which face I hated more, that of the blond-haired, blue-eyed man I had come to despise even more than his old, decrepit father, or my own. The face he was enamoured with. He eventually pulled the mirror out of my hand, and placing it on the bed, held his arms out.

“Dance with me,” he had said in a soft, silky voice.

I remained where I was, my face a blank mask but rage no doubt burning behind my eyes. I may not have had a say over his nocturnal visits, but I would not play these little games or pretend that I wanted him in my wretched little cabin.

Fast, so fast that I didn’t have time to protect myself, he raised his hand and slapped me, sending me crashing to the floor. Pain bloomed along my temple and the left side of my face. I had also bitten my lip when I hit my head. His foot came down on my neck and I felt the dirt on the sole of his boot rubbing into my skin as he pressed down, cutting off my air supply. I struggled in vain to breathe and was close to losing consciousness when he slowly removed his foot and hauled me back onto my feet as if he were picking up a sack of potatoes. Then he held out his arms again, that smile, which never seemed to leave his face, swimming before my eyes as I struggled to clear my vision.

I was bristling with anger and yet fear won out because he could do anything he wanted to me and there was nothing I would be able to do to stop him. No one I could go to for protection. I had been born and bred purely for men like him, not only to do with as they pleased, but to increase their riches by breeding more slaves for them to own.

“Dance with me,” he said again.

Tasting blood in my mouth, I did as I was ordered to do.

“Massa Henry used to please hisself and leave,” I told Mama Akosua. “But Massa John... he like to play.”

Whew! Doesn't that excerpt knock your socks off? Many thanks to A.D. Koboah for allowing us a sneek peek at her intriguing story. We wish her all the best with her book!

Shadow of the Witte Wieven

Today it's my pleasure to post an excerpt from a brand new paranormal romance entitled Shadow of the Witte Wieven by Debbie Peterson. Enjoy!

Blurb:
Despite a contract on her head, lone Drug Enforcement Agent, Aliyana Montijo must ferret out a mole and stop the assassination of top DEA officials, as so ordered by the Colombian drug lord she seeks to take down. The task is a daunting one, for there is no one she can trust. No one that is, until she encounters a most unlikely ally.

Former seventeenth century captain of the Dutch West Indies Company, Wolfaert Dircksen Van Ness, now from a parallel dimension, encounters the beautiful agent during an unearthly storm in the Bermuda triangle. Drawn to the Spanish beauty he rescues, he pledges his assistance, despite her reluctance to accept either his help or his heart.

Can Wolf bridge both space and time to claim the woman he loves?

Excerpt:
Aliyana nodded as she released a breath and said, “Yes, as a matter of fact they did. Hank has demanded a tour of Mercado’s empire. He said that he wants to see the way they produce cocaine from start to finish. By so doing, he could point out their faults and help them improve production. According to Ortiz, Hank had the audacity to boast about his knowledge of the latest in drug manufacturing technology as if they were a bunch of ignorant ‘campesinos.’ As you can imagine, this rankled them a bit.”

“I’m surprised they aren’t going to use this outing as an excuse to kill him,” Cornelius remarked.

Aliyana shrugged as she cast a brief glance downward. “They actually mentioned that. However, as much as Mercado would like to permanently get rid of the man, he’s going to show a bit of restraint and allow the ‘pig’ to live—for now.”

“Did they mention whether or not Mercado planned to comply with this requested tour?” asked Cornelius.

“He is going to comply, but not in the way Hank intends,” she replied. “Mercado is going to take him much farther south, to a factory and lab he no longer uses. He is sending some of his employees ahead to clean the place up and make ready for their visit. Emil wants everything to look as if the lab is in full swing.”

“So Mercado is conducting the tour personally then?” asked Wolf.

“Yes, he is. He doesn’t trust Hank. Therefore, he wants to observe his every movement, personally.”

“How long will it take them to get to this lab?”

“If it’s the one I think it is, about three, maybe four hours. Why do you ask?”

Wolf brushed a hand against his beard as he contemplated this unexpected opportunity. “How many such places could he possibly take Morris?”

“I only know of two,” she said.

“How long would it take to get to other one?”

Aliyana shook her head as she lifted a shoulder. “Oh, I don’t know—perhaps an additional half an hour or so. That’s why I think he’ll opt for the closest one.”

“Did they say when they intend to conduct this tour?”

“Day after tomorrow. Hank is supposed to arrive at dawn. If you still want to follow the man, you will get your chance then.”

“So travel time, to and from is at least six hours, maybe more,” Wolf mused aloud. “The tour itself will take some time. What would you think, another hour maybe two for him to thoroughly inspect the facilities?”

“Every bit of that and then some,” Aliyana said as she knit her brows in consternation. “Wolf, why are you asking all of these questions?”

“With Mercado out of the way, I’m thinking this might be the perfect opportunity to escort you inside the man’s office so you can raid those files on his computer.”

“But we don’t have all of the numbers to his pass code yet,” Aliyana replied. “I can’t get inside without them.”

In response to the reminder, he allowed a slight smile to emerge and for several long moments, he held her gaze without saying a word. Her confusion finally gave way to understanding. He could see it. She drew in a sharp breath as a burst of anger exploded onto her cheeks.

“You have the ability to get me inside that office anytime you want to, don’t you Captain Wolfaert Dircksen Van Ness,” she spat.

Wolf folded his arms against his chest, flashed a full-fledged grin, and bounced his brows.

“I can’t believe you would withhold that information from me,” she seethed as her eyes shot lethal daggers into his person. “And you just let me keep watching that screen for hours on end when such a need didn’t exist—”

“Oh come on, Aliyana,” Wolf laughingly protested. “You surely didn’t think I’d allow you to go in there until the safest possible moment, did you?”

His humor did nothing to improve her anger. If anything, it only served to fuel it. She shook her head then and let him have it--with both barrels blazing--in Spanish, of course. And he enjoyed every minute of the delightful display.

Little Red Riding Wolf

Hey everyone, let’s give a warm welcome to paranormal author, Jessica Aspen. Tomorrow is the big release day for her latest novella, Little Red Riding Wolf. I’m honored that you chose to spend today here at Fox Tales. Let’s get to the details.
  1. Have you always written, or wanted to be a writer, or is it something you’ve done after having another career?
Thanks for having me on as your guest, Sutton, I’m excited to be here today. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but like a lot of writers I was told that it wasn’t realistic. So for most of my life I dabbled when I wrote, didn’t finish anything, pretty much treating it the way one does when you are doing other things as a career. Meanwhile I went to college and emerged with an elementary education degree that I really never used. I just didn’t want to be a teacher. Instead I spent time with my kids and played at part time jobs till finally I decided; it just doesn’t matter if this is a career or not, I want to write. Now I’m thrilled to have Little Red Riding Wolf coming out and guess what, it turns out you can have this as a career!

  1. You write paranormal stories. Have you always been drawn to life on the dark side, or did you start out with another genre?
Well, I still started off dark. My very first romance I wrote seriously was a romantic suspense, complete with a stalker. Maybe I’ll pick that up again someday, but I think what I really will end up doing is combining the supernatural element of paranormal and the mystery element of suspense. This series of novellas isn’t suspense, but I am working on a full length novel that combines both elements, we’ll call it supernatural suspense.

  1. I see from your website that you live in Colorado. That’s where I grew up, and some days I miss it. The scenery is just stunning. What’s your favorite thing about living there?
I didn’t know you grew up here. It is lovely and I think if I move anywhere else I would miss it too. I love the scenery and I love hiking and spending time in the mountains. They provide a sense of serenity it’s difficult to find elsewhere, except maybe the ocean. So I might be talked into trading the mountains for the beach, but not any time soon.

  1. We don’t want to wait any longer. Please tell us about your new release!
Little Red Riding Wolf is an e-novella from Passion in Print Press. It’s my first, but I plan a few more so watch out! Here is the blurb:
Fraternizing with humans is taboo, but when feisty werewolf Red runs into hunky new forest ranger Evan Brewster, she jumps on the opportunity to let loose her desires. Evan is stoked when he meets the petite red haired hottie, and combined with his new discovery of wolves in Colorado, thinks his career and life are made. Then Red pushes him away, her hostile brother threatens his life, and things begin to spiral out of control. Caught between her sexy lover and her pack can Red trust Evan with her secrets, or must she sacrifice her human lover and her heart?
  1. What’s up next for Jessica Aspen?
I’m having fun working on the sequel to Little Red about Red’s brother Seth. In Little Red Riding Wolf Seth is angry and hates humans, so of course he has to have his comeuppance in the sequel. And of course it also is a twisted fairy tale, this time with elements from Snow White.

  1. Before we go, I’ve also noticed that you’re part of a site called Paranormal Freebies. Give us the scoop, woman!
Paranormal Freebies is a blogging site where readers and authors can connect. We’re still in our infancy but we plan on growing bigger and bigger. Right now we try to have guest authors from all genres on Tuesdays and a book review the first Monday of the month. My fellow teammates, ML Guida, Hillary Seidl and Marilyn Wigglesworth and I take turns writing a paranormal blog on Fridays. With each of us having a different view of what paranormal is you’ll find everything from information on haunted houses and shows to information on different spiritual practices. I write about a variety of topics under the heading Wizzards, Witches and Psychics, Oh My!
  1. Where can we stalk-uh, find you around the web?
Thanks for having me! You can find me the first Friday of the month at http://ParanormalFreebies.com and most days during the week at http://jessicaaspen.com. And you can follow me on Twitter @jessicaaspen and on Facebook.com/Jessica.Aspen I look forward to seeing you there! Don’t forget to leave a comment or question for me here  and then click HERE to enter to win novellas, chocolate and more!

It's our pleasure to host you, Jessica. Thank you for taking the time to be here today. We wish you amazing success with your novella, and the entire series!

Betrayal’s Shadow

Happy Friday, everyone! This week's feature simply rocks. Read on for more information, and my review.

What would you do to save your people from extinction?
What if your race held the key to mankind’s future?
One Guardian will risk hell to change the future.

Descended from the race of Guardians, Turen’s people have survived the last two hundred years, quarantined and isolated. Living in secrecy with no mates and no offspring, they fail to deliver on their ability to replenish and heal human souls through the birth of their Guardian children. Risking his life, Turen chooses capture at the hands of a comrade-turned-enemy to seek answers to change the future.

Mia Bowman has no knowledge of the secret Guardian race. Yet, her uncontrollable, nocturnal summons to Turen’s prison cell and her strong sense of justice leave her with little choice but to help him. She can heed his warning and stay clear of his people’s problems or she can ferret out the lies and unravel an ancient tale of murder and deceit. It will take an ultimate sacrifice to stop the unexpected evil and reverse a fatal ending to the Guardian line.

THE GUARDIANS OF EDEN:
A race of beings created in a Sanctum at the far edge of Eden. Co-existing with mankind, they safeguarded human souls and the promise of eternity—until a virus killed all over the age of eighteen. The surviving children fled to the Sanctum for protection, children raising children without the full legacy of their history and knowledge. Two hundred years of solitude have produced a race of semi-immortals fortified with powers and intellect but lacking the mates who will make them whole and allow them to fulfill their covenant with mankind.

Betrayal’s Shadow is the first in the Guardians of Eden Series. Book 2, Warrior Reborn, is also available and book 3, Destiny’s Mark is due for release in late spring 2012.

A former technology specialist, KH LeMoyne now writes romance fulltime with series in urban fantasy, high fantasy, and scifi/futuristic. She lives in Maryland with her wonderful husband and corgi. Much to her dismay, she rarely encounters supernatural beings other than on paper. Visit her website: http://www.khlemoyne.com/ or blog: http://fantasypoweredbylove.com/

My Review:

First off, let me say I’ve never written such a challenging review. Why was it challenging? Because the story is just that good. I looked for something that wasn’t quite up to par, and I couldn’t find it. This story really has it all. It offers a distinctive blend of elements that all mesh perfectly to reveal a tale of deception, compassion, love, betrayal, amazing courage and strong convictions. Who doesn’t love a hero who’ll sacrifice himself, and a heroine who’s not perfect, but his perfect match? And all of this is supported by secondary characters, and subplots that enhance the storyline, giving it depth and making this book a thoroughly fantastic tale. If you enjoy urban fantasy, paranormal, or fantasy this book is a must read.

LeMoyne is now firmly on my auto-buy list. As a matter of fact, I’ve already bought the second book in the series and am looking forward to reading it.

Just in case you're going to take my advice and get your own copy of this awesome book, or if you'd like to keep up with K.H. LeMoyne around the web, here are some links you might enjoy.

This Year In Writing

I've spent the last couple days seriously considering my writing goals. Realistically, given my schedule, er, okay, I said no excuses this year didn't I. Darn, that didn't take long did it?

The first stop will be to finish my current WIP. Then I'd really like to write a novella. That would be a new challenge. And lastly, to complete another novel length work.

There we go. It's out in the open. Now I've got to go hunt up some of those word tracker thingies to post on my blog. Just so you can follow along.

Yep, that's it. Sounds simple doesn't it?

Break Out

This week we have a very special guest for you. All of you know that paranormal is my absolute favorite genre to read, so it is with great joy that I welcome paranormal author Nina Croft.

Nina has a special gift for those of you who follow Fox Tales. She'll be giving one lucky commenter an ebook copy of book one of The Blood Hunter series, Break Out. So be sure to leave a comment and let us know you visited today.

I promise I’ll try to be still and not interrupt too much. Let’s get started!

 1. From your website, I see that you write paranormal, science fiction, and fantasy. What did you write first? And why were you drawn to it?

Actually, I first started out trying to write contemporary category romance. I submitted a few partials to Harlequin, got some encouraging rejections – they tended to like my voice but said I had way too much external conflict.

Then I realized I was reading far more paranormal romances than contemporary. Being a strong believer in writing the sorts of things you love to read, I decided to have a go. And loved it right from the start.

I think what really draws me to all forms of speculative fiction is the fact that absolutely anything can happen; the only limitation is your imagination.

2. Always curious about methods, are you a pantser or a plotter?

I’m a total plotter. I’ve tried both methods and if I try and pants it, I get lost in the middle and end up having to go back and do massive rewrites. So now, I plot. I outline and I do a scene by scene breakdown. Then I write a fast first draft. I’ve found it works best for me; I can concentrate on what the characters are doing in a given scene, without worrying about the bigger picture. It also gives me time to get to know the characters before I actually start writing.

3. Do you prefer music or white noise when you write, or is absolute quiet a must?

Quiet isn’t a must, but I don’t tend to listen to music when I write. Not because it distracts me, but because I end up just not noticing it, so there’s no point. Often if I’m stuck, then I’ll put some music on, and it often helps me through the rough patch.

4. You are an avid reader, as well as an author. Can you tell us what author is at the top of your auto-buy list?

It changes, but right now, Patricia Briggs, JR Ward, Jim Butcher, Janet Evanovitch, Karen Marie-Moning, Harlan Coben…

5. When you’re not writing, or reading, what do you like to do with your spare time?

I live on an almond farm in the mountains of Southern Spain. There are often chores to do around the farm; weeding, pruning, picking, making wine (we have a small vineyard). I also have a few dogs and enjoy taking them for walks. And I have a horse called Gencianna, so I ride most days. I’m also quite fond of lying under an almond tree, drinking wine, and admiring the view.

What incredible scenery! It would be hard to get any work done with a view like that. I commend you on your discipline.

6. As a lover of the creative process, where did you get the idea for your current release?

The Blood Hunter series is a mixture of genres. It’s science fiction, with a paranormal twist and a whole load of romance.

I’ve always been a huge fan of space opera, and I absolutely loved Joss Whedon’s Firefly. It was after watching this for the third time that I decided I wanted to write a space adventure. But I also love anything paranormal, so when the pilot of my space ship, El Cazador, kept hinting that he might be a vampire, I thought—why not.

7. Tell us about the series.

The Blood Hunter series is set in the future, where man has fled to the stars and there they have discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Extremely rare and exorbitantly expensive, Meridian is only available to a select few, and a new class has evolved—The Collective. Immensely rich and immortal they rule the civilized universe.

The series follows the adventures of the crew of the space ship, El Cazador, each book focusing on the romance of one crew member. Break Out, book 1, follows the romance of Ricardo Sanchez, owner, pilot and vampire and how he falls for a mysterious blonde, Skylar Rossario, who employs the crew to break her brother out of the Collective’s maximum security prison.

Book 2, Deadly Pursuit, releases this month. The book takes place in the aftermath Break Out, and follows the romance Skylar’s ‘brother’ who just happens to be a werewolf.

Break Out

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

 8. What’s next for Nina?

I’m currently writing book 3 of my Blood Hunter series, but I’m also revisiting some of those contemporaries I wrote, and hopefully they’ll be released next year.

Release Day!

A month or so ago, I mentioned placing first runner-up in a writing contest for Gypsy Shadow Publishing. The prize was to have your work published by them. Yay!

This story is a little bit different from what I usually write, but just in time for the holidays. I’ve always been a fan of Dickens A Christmas Carol, and Scrooged is always up for regular review. My favorite part is the ghosts. Don’t you wonder who they are? How they came to be? I did.

Without further ado, here’s the cover and blurb for my short story, Christmas Holly.

A gallery owner living in the past collides with a beautiful ghost from the future. Is it life, death, or love, which will imitate art?

Young, beautiful, and certain of her future, Holly Clark fully expected to have a wonderful time attending her mother’s annual Christmas Eve bash. The one thing she didn’t expect—was her own untimely death.

Gallery owner and world renowned artist, Greg Marshall is desperate to relive his past. Until he receives a startling visit from a woman he believed to be the love of his life. Her sudden appearance has the power to change everything.

Love doesn’t mean what it used to. Can the past really affect the future, or can the future transform the past?
