Yes, we’re the new kid in this crazy ever-changing publishing world. And we’re a bit different. I wouldn’t go so far as to call us a hybrid, but I see our place in an author’s endeavor to build a writing career as one smoothly functioning part of a whole. Not the be-all-end-all goal of career building.

These days the smart, career focused author will have their eggs in many baskets, traditional publication, small press, and indie. I applaud that, and believe it’s entirely appropriate.

If as an author you find you like what we do at HDP, you’re welcome to publish with us for as little or as long as you like, but we understand that these days it takes more than one publishing experience to build a solid writing career.

Those of you who know me, know I’ve been self-employed for a long time. HDP isn’t my first trip around the business block. I know how hard you must to work to build success. And I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than work with those in the publishing world. Ten Quickies with Jamie Adams

Today, I must extend my apologies to Jaimie Adams. I was supposed to host her on Monday, but I was sick and missed it. Let's not confuse me with someone who's organized and does these things in advance, okay? So please, let's show her some love, and check out her new YA release, Not Pretty Enough.

1. Mountains or Beaches?

I quite like both actually! I’ll say beaches because I live in amongst mountains but don’t see the beach very often so it’s always nice to head down there!

2. Early Morning or Late Night?

Late night. I’m not a morning person at all! If I get up too early or I’m too tired then I tend to stare at the computer screen and not do anything so mornings aren’t very productive for me, whereas I can work late into the night and get much more done then!
3. High Heels or Sneakers?

Sneakers. I’m not a very girly girl and don’t know how people can walk in some of the heels you see around!

4. Summer or Winter?

Winter! I love snow and cold weather and I hate being too hot, so winter is definitely my favourite time of year!

5. Wine or Chocolate?

Chocolate, easily! Nothing makes you feel better than chocolate!

6. Pen or Laptop?

Laptop. I’m too slow writing with a pen, and my handwriting is horrible!

7. Sports Car or Motorcycle?

 Car. Somehow they seem safer than motorcycles!

 8. Tea or Coffee?

Tea! How could you even ask me that?! Tea is an absolute necessity, and I am addicted to it. I can’t function in the mornings without a cuppa! I can’t stand coffee – I don’t mind coffee flavoured things like cake or ice cream, but coffee itself is horrible! Tea all the way!

9. Appetizer or Dessert?

No contest - dessert!

10. Kindle or Paperback?

Kindle! I never expected to love my Kindle like I do, I bought it thinking I’d never give up physical books but might use it occasionally, but the thing is that paperbacks take up so much space, and I’ve run out of that! The Kindle is so easy and holds so many books, I now choose the Kindle edition over the paperback every time. I don’t know how I’d survive without my Kindle!

If they’re fourteen and have a chest bigger than most of their school, including the teachers, they don’t. I’m a DD cup. Or the last time a bus driver asked my face and not my chest for the fare. Everyone notices boobs when you’re my age. In fact, the only human in the world who doesn’t notice them is the one person I would quite like to notice them.

Lloyd Layton.

I’d quite like him to notice my personality too, but at this point just noticing my mere existence will do. If I have to use my boobs to lure him in, then so be it. The thing is, Lloyd Layton is hot, popular, and really, really tall. Taller than everyone else in our year. Taller than the teachers. Occasionally taller than the doorways. He knows what it’s like to be picked on for a physical attribute you can’t control. He’s different too. He knows what it’s like to be an outsider. Okay, when it comes to Lloyd Layton, he’s not really an outsider, because he’s absolutely gorgeous and loads of people like him, and I doubt anyone would dare to pick on him for anything because he could knock them flying with one swoop of his gigantic hands. But still. He’s taller than everyone and I have bigger boobs than everyone. We’re clearly a match made in heaven. It’s just a shame that he can’t see it yet.

But I’m sure he will one day soon.

I’m actually moving closer to that goal because he said one sentence to me back in December.

One sentence. Three small words. Not the three words I would like to hear him say, but I’ll take what I can get.

It was the last lesson of the last day of term before the Christmas holidays. Double technology. Not usually something to get excited about, but we came to the conclusion that the Christmas spirit had gone to Mr. Vale’s head because he let us watch a movie in class instead of doing any work.

The Princess Bride.

We were allowed to pull chairs in around the TV and sit and watch a movie for two hours. Guess who pulled his chair in not that far away from mine?

Lloyd Layton.

I don’t know what happened next. I can’t explain it. It was like having an out of body experience. I’ll never understand how I had the courage to do it, but halfway through the film, I leaned over and said, “This is a good movie.” To Lloyd Layton. Better than that, he actually replied. He said, “Yes, it is.”

Three whole words.

It got even better than that again because after it was over and we were putting the chairs up on the desks, he smiled at me. A real smile. And it wasn’t at the person behind me because I was next to a wall. He smiled at me.

Cover Indecision

There’s a little bit of cover flutter going on in the Fox household these days. I have a happy announcement to make. My first novel, Slide Job (formerly Lion Tamers) is now available again. Yay!!

Which leads me to my next issue. If any of you out there have read it, please chime in. I do value your opinions. I love the shiny new cover. However, I’m not sure it accurately reflects the story.

Here’s the current cover with the white background.

Another issue with this cover, is that as a series, there seems to
be a derriere shortage. Who knew? There aren't enough different ones that fit the format correctly. I guess they could use the same
girl and change the colors, etc. but I'm not sure I like that idea.

And here’s the cover that I really like. But I’ve been told it’s not girlie enough. That romance readers won’t buy it. This is where you come in. Really?

My quandary is that I feel the current cover is a bit misleading in the way that having a half-dressed (although lovely) lady on the cover, would lead one to believe that there’s lots of hot sex. Well, there is some hot sex, but there’s more sexual tension and action, than sex. The title could be misleading also, Slide Job is a racing term, but I've had the occasional snicker that tells me people weren't thinking about racing when they looked at it. Not only that, the white makes me think of a light and airy story. If you've read it, you know it’s not. I don’t do light and airy. So again, I’m lead to the red one.

But ultimately, your opinion matters as well. What do you think? Red or white? Or do you even worry about the cover when you buy a book?

1. Mountains or Beaches?  That one is tough! I grew up in the mountains and do love pine trees and snowy peaks but I love going to the Oregon Coast and watching the waves crash against the rocks. I guess I’d say beaches.

2. Early Morning or Late Night? Early Morning. I love watching the sun come up, hear the birds and animals starting their day, and having yet another day to be the people I love and do the things I love to do.

3. High Heels or Sneakers? Sneakers! Well, boots, actually. It’s hard to walk through a corral or field in high heels. ;)

4. Summer or Winter? Another hard one…I love summer for the warmth, the smell of fresh cut hay, riding my horse. But I love the beauty of winter. I guess summer trumps winter because I came up with more reasons I like it. ;)

5. Wine or Chocolate? Chocolate. No problem determining that one. I can’t start my day without a cup of hot chocolate and I keep Dove Dark chocolate in the house at all times.

6. Pen or Laptop? Laptop. As I get older and use the computer more, my writing has become so scribbly I can’t read it half the time.

7. Sports Car or Motorcycle? Sports Car! You won’t catch me hurtling down a paved road with nothing around me but leather!

8. Gold or Silver? It used to be gold but I like silver better now.

9. Appetizer or Dessert? Dessert! There are sooo many things you can do with chocolate syrup. ;)

 

10. Kindle or Paperback? Both! I love my Kindle but there are times, like in the bath tub and long trips when I can’t recharge the Kindle that a paperback is my go to source for reading.

      Tino exited the office congratulating himself at having made it to Garza’s inner sanctum, but now realized there were two more doors that would need breached before he could find the evidence to bring in the Drug Enforcement Agency.

      His mind wandered to how to find the Alvarez brothers and make his way up in status to gain entry into the room behind the bullet-proof door. He stepped out onto the front portico. Cezar walked alongside a woman who carried herself in a familiar way.

      Tino’s blood iced with fear as he recognized the long hair, button nose, and wire-rimmed glasses. Another glance at the woman he knew so well and the ice melted, simmered, and quickened his heart. What brought his querida to the drug lord’s Mexico City compound? Dread, desire, and regret collided as he blindly slammed into a cement pillar.

MY REVIEW:

Upon reading the first book in the series, Fantasy Mountain, as a reader I was totally satisfied with Victoria and Brett’s HEA. When I heard about this book, I wondered how Ms. Denna would make us care about the same couple one more time.

She succeeded spectacularly. This book is a triumph of emotional risk, relationships, and sacrifice, with highly believable suspense thrown in just to keep us on the edge of our seats. How would you add a third to an already happy relationship? This question is not only explored, but answered to everyone’s satisfaction.

The setting is pure entertainment. What’s not to love about a cruise ship that makes an all-out effort to fulfill your every erotic fantasy? And does so with what’s becoming Piper’s brand of trade-mark humor which balances out the story, making it not only a scorching read, but a fun one as well.

If you are looking for a well written ménage story that will capture your imagination, this is it. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good Things with Piper Denna

Hey, everyone! Just in case your summer isn't quite hot enough, today it's my pleasure to host author Piper Denna, who'll be chatting about her new release, Victoria's Secret Wish.

Why mess with a good thing?

So I have this married couple in one of my books—Fantasy Mountain—and they’re my favorite romantic couple out of every one I’ve written. They got their HEA and for all we know, are doing just great together.

Why would I want to write their sequel and have them experimenting with another partner?

Good question, one I asked my muse when she seemed determined to take them into ménage territory in their next book, rather than have them moving on to the next stage as a couple (and taking backstage as secondary characters, while a new H and h get their romance). I knew Victoria, and was certain she couldn’t dabble with another man and walk away unattached. It’s just not in her makeup. So of course she was going to fall in love with this hot Olympic swimmer-dude who’s protecting his identity, hounded by the media, and lonely (I did!). Which meant things were going to get sticky in her marriage. There are bound to be hurt feelings, jealousy, distrust… right?

Yes and no. I did some research (including reading some m/f/m novels, most of which were more about sex than love) and discovered many women fantasize about having a second man, and it’s not all about the physical aspect, but for many females the idea of having another person focused on taking care of them… Yeah. I can see how that would click.

So, did inviting David into their bed screw up (pardon the pun) Vic and Brett’s relationship? It did get awkward several different times. But I think they managed to work out the kinks (again with the punny clichés, right?) so they have options, and are happy for now. Believably. And man, did they have a good time getting where they went…

This is a stand-alone novel, but it reads better knowing the characters’ backstory from Fantasy Mountain, especially the “bad guy”, who now has an anonymous accomplice aboard.

Piper Denna’s stories are not cut-and-dried romance. Dragon Rider's Gift

First off, let me apologize for not posting this yesterday. Due to time constraints, I wasn't quite able to finish the story. And believe me, it was worth finishing. Without further adieu, here's the blurb for KH LeMoyne's shiny new release, Dragon Rider's Gift. And my review.

My Review

Roark is a dragon rider on a mission to find his dragon. The years he spends on his quest hone him into a man of honor and duty who is very aware of his station in life. He exists to protect and serve; not daring to dream fate would offer him anything more.

Nira is a princess who is being trained by her father the king, to one day rule their land. Unfortunately there are gaps in her education that only a lover can fill. She is born with a singular, unmanageable gift that will either help her people survive the threat of war, or force them to succumb to it.

Kraz is the ancient dragon who enables both of them to reach their full potential.

This story is a classic tale of two people finding love where they least expect it. The author deftly suspends disbelief with characters that are skillfully drawn of both light and dark, with human failings we all understand. Set against the backdrop of war and magic, this is a wonderful tale of love and adventure. The thing that moves this story from ordinary to extraordinary is the relationship between Kraz, his rider, and the future queen. I couldn’t stop turning pages because I had to know what would happen next.

I truly hope there will be more installments in the Portals of Destiny Tales. In my opinion, KH LeMoyne has crafted another must read story. If you’re a fan of fantasy romance, add this to the top of your TBR list.

Paradise 21

Happy Monday, everyone! I thought we’d start this week off with a bang.

I’ve been lucky enough to interview a fabulous author and friend, Aubrie Dionne. We'll chat about her writing, and her new release which I've been lucky enough to review. And without further ado, let’s get to the good stuff.

1.   What has surprised you the most about being a published author?

Oh boy, that’s a good question! I didn’t realize how many friends I would make along the way, (like you!), and how supportive they would be. I love my critique partners and my beta readers, and I never feel alone in the process.
 
I really enjoy reading other people’s works (Like Christmas Holly- an awesome ebook!), and it’s so neat I get to talk to the authors behind them. J 

2. Do you need to be in a specific place or atmosphere before you can write?
      
I used to, but now that I have to write to meet deadlines, not so much anymore! Was it Stephen King that said something like, “amateurs wait for inspiration, while the rest of us get up and go to work!” ?
 
3. Are you a plotter or a pantser?
 
A little of both. I know the beginning and the end, and certain key elements in the middle, and then I “pants it” the rest of the way!

4. Since your day job involves music, do you prefer music or quiet when you write?

 
I prefer quiet, relaxing music (like new age) without words. I listen to Itunes radio. My favorite station is radio Gaia. J They speak in some other language, so I have no idea what the announcer is saying!
 
5. When not working or writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to watch movies! Fantasy and sci fi are my favorites (no surprise there, right?). I also spend a lot of time with my family because all of my three siblings and both my parents live about ten to twenty minutes away. I have a new nephew, Evan, about to turn one this month!
 
6. Most authors are avid readers. Which author is at the top of your auto-buy list?
 
I love Patricia McKillip. My favorite book of hers in Winter Rose. It reads like a fairytale, which each sentence flowing like music to my ears.
 
7. Would you tell us about your latest release?
 
Paradise 21 is inspired by the global population food shortage crisis going on today. I wondered what would happen when the Earth becomes uninhabitable, and came up with a series based on colony ships seeking alternate worlds.

8. What inspired this particular book?

Ummmm….I have to say Star Wars, and the planet of Tatooine. I grew up watching the old Star Wars movies over and over again, so I think it’s been reconstituted into my DNA. J (Not a totally bad thing, heh?)

9. What’s next in Author Aubrie’s world?

I just finished the sequel to Paradise 21 titled Tundra 37. It’s about another colony ship that is forced to land on an ice planet to survive. I’m working on a tie in novella to the series called A Hero Rising. This novella will chronicle the fall of Earth as the colony ships leave and the start of the space pirates! (And there’s even zombies!!!)

Here's the review:

Aries is a spunky, strong-minded young woman who had me cheering for her from the first page. She’s determined to carve out her own destiny, no matter the odds. And the challenges she faces are steep. Escaping from the New Dawn is one thing, surviving that escape is another thing entirely.

Although labeled a pirate, Striker is pure hero material through and through. He’ll do what’s necessary, and he’s not afraid to make difficult choices when needed. A soft spot for the underdogs and a hard edge for those who’d take advantage kept me reading to the end just to see if he’d attain his heart’s desire.

Three cheers for Ms. Dionne. She’s created an engaging cast of characters, each desperately struggling to live their lives and find happiness in a universe where living things have all but become extinct. Her skillfully drawn characterizations are captivating. The world building is believable from the first page and enables you to sit back and enjoy the thrill ride that is Paradise 21. A tightly woven plot and a masterfully developed sub-plot will keep you turning pages.

If you are sci-fi romance fan, I highly recommend this book. It’s a fast paced adventure that’s hard to put down. So hard in fact, that I read it in one sitting! I’m glad this is a series. I can’t wait for the next book.
